President-elect Donald Trump announced more appointees to his incoming second administration on Friday, including one familiar face from his first stint in the White House.

Trump announced that former State Department spokeswoman Morgan Ortagus had been selected as his Deputy Special Presidential Envoy for Middle East Peace, according to Fox News.

In doing so, Trump acknowledged that Ortagus had once been a harsh critic of his but had also later served him admirably and came highly recommended by fellow Republicans, and stated, "Let’s see what happens."

Ortagus tasked to help bring peace to Middle East

On Friday, President-elect Trump revealed in a Truth Social post that he had picked Ortagus to serve in his incoming administration as a deputy to the Special Presidential Envoy for Middle East Peace Steve Witkoff, a friend and fellow New York real estate mogul.

"Early on Morgan fought me for three years, but hopefully has learned her lesson," Trump said. "These things usually don’t work out, but she has strong Republican support, and I’m not doing this for me, I’m doing it for them."

"Let’s see what happens," he continued. "She will hopefully be an asset to Steve, a great leader and talent, as we seek to bring calm and prosperity to a very troubled region. I expect great results, and soon!"

Trump went on to highlight Ortagus' experience with "Diplomacy and National Security," that she is "an active U.S. Navy Reserve Intelligence Officer," and that she'd been involved in his "Historic Abraham Accords team that brought unprecedented Peace to the Middle East."

He also noted her prior role as State Department spokeswoman from 2019 through the end of his first administration in 2021, as well as that she had previously served as a financial intelligence analyst at the Treasury Department and as that department's Deputy U.S. Treasury Attaché to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia during the Obama administration, and ended the post with, "Good luck Morgan!"

Ortagus "honored" by appointment that is a "dream come true"

Ortagus responded to the announced appointment with a statement posted to her X account that said, "I am honored that President Trump appointed me to the role of Deputy Presidential Envoy to the Middle East, under my dear friend Steve Witkoff."

"To be given the opportunity to once again represent my country and the Trump administration in a crucial diplomatic role is [a] dream come true," she continued.

"The most important thing is that through President Trump," Ortagus added, "we bring peace and stability to a troubled region, and I'm grateful to play a small role in that endeavor."

Highly experienced and well-regarded

Axios reported that President-elect Trump's "rebuke" of Ortagus amid the appointment announcement was a reference to her prior staunch opposition against his candidacy and "isolationist" foreign policy in the 2016 Republican primary.

However, she is well-regarded for her experience and expertise in foreign policy and national security, and has forged good relationships with many top Republicans in those areas, including several other members of the incoming Trump administration like Secretary of State-designate Marco Rubio, incoming national security adviser Mike Waltz, and envoy for special missions, Ric Grenell.

Likely at the top of the to-do list for Ortagus will be achieving a ceasefire and hostage release in Gaza, followed by a reconstruction plan once the fighting is finished, not to mention achieving a long sought after peace deal between Israel and Saudi Arabia, along with keeping Iran and its nuclear ambitions contained.
