President Donald Trump announced late last month that he would approve a proposed merger between U.S. Steel and the Japanese-based company Nippon Steel.

This past Friday saw Trump make good on that announcement by signing an executive order allowing the deal to proceed.

Agreement expected to create 70,000 jobs

Just the News noted how the deal is expected to create over 70,000 jobs and invest approximately $11 billion into the U.S. economy over the next three years, facts which were touted in a joint statement put out by the two companies.

"This partnership will bring a massive investment that will support our communities and families for generations to come," the statement read.

"We look forward to putting our commitments into action to make American steelmaking and manufacturing great again," it added.

The statement also expressed gratitude to "President Trump and his administration for their bold leadership and strong support for our historic partnership."

Meanwhile, the Washington Examiner quoted White House spokesman Kush Desai as saying, "Today’s executive order ensures U.S. Steel will remain in the great commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and be safeguarded as a critical element of America’s national and economic security."

U.S. Steel will retain its current name and headquarters

Fox Business reported in May that the deal would involve Nippon Steel purchasing a 20% share of U.S. Steel while the latter kept its current headquarters and leadership team while also upgrading and expanding domestic production facilities.

It was welcomed in a social media post by Pennsylvania Republican Sen. Dave McCormick, who called the agreement a "huge victory for America and the U.S. Steel Corporation."

"Only Donald Trump could have made this happen and I’m grateful to him for having me, Congressman Mike Kelly (PA-16), and Congressman Dan Meuser (PA-09) from our Pennsylvania delegation in the Oval Office yesterday to discuss it," McCormick added.

Some steel workers "elated" by news of deal

Meanwhile, Pittsburgh's WTAE observed that some of those employed at the U.S. Steel facility in Braddock, Pennsylvania, "were elated" over the new partnership.

"It's a huge victory because we're getting ready to celebrate our 150th anniversary," steel worker Glenn Thomas was quoted as telling the local station.

Fellow steel worker Andrew Macey agreed, stating, "You take the stress of every day, not knowing that you’ll have a job tomorrow or you’ll have a future. That’s all over now."
