Trump asks Jack Smith for key J6 evidence in new court filing

Former President Donald Trump wants special counsel Jack Smith to hand over information about any undercover government agents who were involved in the Capitol protest of Jan. 6, 2021.

Trump and his legal team, according to Newsweek, made the disclosure request in a new court filing that they submitted last week.

This is all part of the so-called election interference case that Smith, on behalf of the Biden administration, has brought against Trump, in Washington, D.C.

Smith alleges that Trump criminally sought to undermine the results of the 2020 presidential election, and, thus, Smith has charged Trump will such crimes as conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding, among others. Trump has pled "not guilty" to the charges.

Trump's latest filing

The former president and his legal team submitted the disclosure request to Judge Tanya Chutkan on the day before Thanksgiving.

In the filing, Trump's lawyers - Todd Blanche and John Lauro - ask for "all documents regarding informants, cooperators, undercover agents, representatives, or anyone acting in a similar capacity" who were "at or within five miles of the United States Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021."

Trump's lawyers also ask for information about any undercover agents or informants who were "involved in the assistance, planning, or encouragement of any activities related to the protest, breach, or trespassing of the United States Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021."

In addition to all of this, Trump's lawyers are also looking to get information about any payments or "things of value" that were given to such informants or undercover agents.

Now, the question will be whether Judge Chutkan grants this request. Given her deep Democratic ties, it would not be surprising if she rejects it.

Background

Trump and many others have maintained that, during the Capitol protest of Jan. 6, 2021, there were undercover government agents who encouraged the protestors to do what they did.

This has not been confirmed. But - even though such outlets as the Associated Press refer to it as a "conspiracy" theory - it has not really been denied either.

Recently, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) released many hours of security footage from the Jan. 6 protest. Some have been looking through the videos to see whether they can identify one of these alleged undercover agents. Thus far, none have been found.

But, Johnson, so far, has only released a fraction of the total security footage, which amounts to over 44,000 hours.

It would be quite an embarrassment for Smith and the Biden administration if Trump and his lawyers were to force Smith to hand over evidence that proves the undercover agent theory that the mainstream media and others continue to refer to as a conspiracy.
