Trump authorizes use of National Guard to restore order and protect federal assets amid unrest in Los Angeles
Parts of Los Angeles, California, have devolved into lawlessness as leftist activists and protesters have acted for multiple days to physically obstruct and oppose the efforts of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents to apprehend and detain illegal aliens in the so-called sanctuary city.
Due to the apparent lack of an adequate law enforcement response to the unrest by local and state leaders, President Donald Trump ordered the deployment of around 2,000 National Guard troops to help restore order and to protect federal personnel and property, Politico reported.
Unsurprisingly, Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom lashed out against the "inflammatory" move by Trump to "take over" control of the state's National Guard units, even as it was Newsom's own failures as an elected leader that compelled Trump's move.
Trump activates National Guard to restore order in L.A.
On Saturday, and in response to "numerous incidents of violence and disorder" targeting federal immigration agents in L.A., President Trump issued a memo that expressly authorized the secretary of Defense to coordinate with and assist the Department of Homeland Security in protecting federal personnel and property.
Trump further authorized the secretary to call up at least 2,000 California National Guard troops to federal service as well as to deploy regular Armed Forces troops to augment and supplement the NG troops and civilian law enforcement, if necessary.
"In recent days, violent mobs have attacked ICE Officers and Federal Law Enforcement Agents carrying out basic deportation operations in Los Angeles, California," White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said. "These operations are essential to halting and reversing the invasion of illegal criminals into the United States. In the wake of this violence, California’s feckless Democrat leaders have completely abdicated their responsibility to protect their citizens."
"That is why President Trump has signed a Presidential Memorandum deploying 2,000 National Guardsmen to address the lawlessness that has been allowed to fester," she added. "The Trump Administration has a zero tolerance policy for criminal behavior and violence, especially when that violence is aimed at law enforcement officers trying to do their jobs. These criminals will be arrested and swiftly brought to justice. The Commander-in-Chief will ensure the laws of the United States are executed fully and completely."
Newsom slams troop deployment as "inflammatory" and unnecessary
In reaction to that news, Gov. Newsom lamented in an X post, "The federal government is moving to take over the California National Guard and deploy 2,000 soldiers. That move is purposefully inflammatory and will only escalate tensions."
"LA authorities are able to access law enforcement assistance at a moment’s notice. We are in close coordination with the city and county, and there is currently no unmet need," the governor added. "The Guard has been admirably serving LA throughout recovery. This is the wrong mission and will erode public trust."
Just moments later, however, President Trump posted on Truth Social, "If Governor Gavin Newscum, of California, and Mayor Karen Bass, of Los Angeles, can’t do their jobs, which everyone knows they can’t, then the Federal Government will step in and solve the problem, RIOTS & LOOTERS, the way it should be solved!!!"
Newsom "should be thanking President Trump"
Of course, like any other weak leader might do when their fecklessness is fully exposed, Gov. Newsom bristled at President Trump's move and complained on social media, "The federal government is taking over the California National Guard and deploying 2,000 soldiers in Los Angeles -- not because there is a shortage of law enforcement, but because they want a spectacle."
In a message clearly aimed at the activists, protesters, and rioters causing violence and unrest on L.A.'s streets, the governor added, "Don't give them one. Never use violence. Speak out peacefully."
That post was subsequently shared by press secretary Leavitt, who further commented, "Illegal criminal aliens and violent mobs have been committing arson, throwing rocks at vehicles, and attacking federal law enforcement for days. Gavin Newsom has done nothing to stop this violence."
"He should be thanking President Trump for bringing law and order to California -- a basic value that Newsom and his fellow Democrats have failed to uphold," she added.
