Former President Donald Trump and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) have long had a contentious relationship.

That fact was on display again this week when Trump publicly called for McConnell and his allies to face primary challenges.

Trump attacks McConnell for supporting Democrats' omnibus spending bill

According to the Daily Caller, Trump lashed out on Monday morning against McConnell and his wife, former Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao.

"We must now stop Mitch McConnell and his China flagrant boss, Coco Chow [Chao]," the former president insisted in a Truth Social post.

"It’s as though he just doesn’t care anymore, he pushes through anything the Democrats want," Trump complained before referencing the Democrats' massive omnibus spending bill passed late last month.

"The $1.7 TRILLION quickly approved Bill of the week before was HORRIBLE. Zero for USA Border Security. If he waited just ten days, the now 'United Republican Congress' could have made it MUCH BETTER, or KILLED IT," Trump insisted.

"Something is wrong with McConnell, and those Republican Senators that Vote with him. PRIMARY THEM ALL!" the former president declared.

McConnell represents Kentucky, and the website Ballotpedia states that his current term does not end until January of 2027.

Former president works closely with Kevin McCarthy

Trump's attitude towards McConnell stands in sharp contrast to his relationship with newly elected House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA).

This past Saturday, Trump put up another Truth Social post which featured a video clip of McCarthy expressing gratitude to the former president for his support.

"But I do want to especially thank President Trump," McCarthy told an assembled group of reporters shortly after his election early on Saturday morning, adding, "I don't think anybody should doubt his influence."

"He was with me from the beginning," the new speaker said of Trump. "Somebody wrote the doubt of whether he was there, and he was all in. He would call me and call others. I was just talking with him tonight."

"What he is really saying, really for the party and for the country, [is that] we have to come together. We have to focus on the economy. We have to focus--make our borders secure. We've got so much work to do, and he was a great influence to make that happen," McCarthy declared as he drew to a close.

For his part, Trump made a point of captioning the video clip by saying, "Thank you Kevin. It was my great honor."

" A free people [claim] their rights, as derived from the laws of nature."
