Trump calls on Alabama legislature to protect IVF

Former President Donald Trump is calling upon Alabama's legislature to protect in vitro fertilization (IVF).

This comes after the Alabama Supreme Court ruled that frozen embryos ought to be treated by the law the same as children are treated by the law.

This decision has already caused the state's largest hospital to pause IVF treatments, and the concern is that the ruling could essentially do away with IVF treatments in Alabama.

Trump made a statement on the ruling on Friday, calling for Alabama's legislature to take action to protect IVF treatments.

"I strongly support . . ."

Trump released his statement Friday on Truth Social.

"Under my leadership, the Republican Party will always support the creation of strong, thriving, healthy American families. We want to make it easier for mothers and fathers to have babies, not harder! That includes supporting the availability of fertility treatments like IVF in every State in America," Trump wrote.

He continued, "Like the OVERWHELMING MAJORITY of Americans, including the VAST MAJORITY of Republicans, Conservatives, Christians, and Pro-Life Americans, I strongly support the availability of IVF for couples who are trying to have a precious baby."

Accordingly, Trump called upon the Alabama legislature to "quickly" take protective action.

He wrote:

Today, I am calling on the Alabama Legislature to act quickly to find an immediate solution to preserve the availability of IVF in Alabama. The Republican Party should always be on the side of the Miracle of Life - and the side of Mothers, Fathers, and their Beautiful Babies. IVF is an important part of that, and our Great Republican Party will always be with you, in your quest, for the ULTIMATE JOY IN LIFE!

Background

The Alabama Supreme Court, on Tuesday, ruled that "unborn children are 'children' . . . without exception based on developmental stage, physical location, or any other ancillary characteristics."

ABC News reports, "The unprecedented decision from the court could impact the future of IVF treatments in the state -- and several IVF providers have paused parts of their care to patients for fear of legal risks."

Trump has been very cautious about opining on these particular issues, which is exemplified, once again, by his decision to wait several days before releasing a statement on the Alabama Supreme Court's ruling.

The problem for Trump is that not all of his supporters agree about these issues, meaning that Trump has to be careful not to upset a large contingent of his followers. At the same time, he has to keep in mind undecided voters, making sure that he does not come off as too extreme with regard to such issues.

This is certainly something to keep an eye on as the 2024 election draws nearer.
