Since returning to the White House earlier this year, President Trump has repeatedly infuriated critics by exercising his power to grant pardons.

However, the president raised eyebrows this week when he publicly called on a foreign nation to pardon its leader.

Trump says Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu should be pardoned

As Axios reported, Wednesday saw Trump put up a post on his Truth Social platform in which he asked that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's corruption trial be "cancelled immediately."

"BREAKING NEWS…I was shocked to hear that the State of Israel, which has just had one of its Greatest Moments in History, and is strongly led by Bibi Netanyahu, is continuing its ridiculous Witch Hunt against their Great War Time Prime Minister!" Trump declared.

"Bibi and I just went through HELL together, fighting a very tough and brilliant longtime enemy of Israel, Iran, and Bibi could not have been better, sharper, or stronger in his LOVE for the incredible Holy Land," he asserted.

"Anybody else would have suffered losses, embarrassment, and chaos," Trump continued before hailing Netanyahu as "a WARRIOR, like perhaps no other Warrior in the History of Israel."

The president went on to suggest that "Netanyahu’s trial should be CANCELLED, IMMEDIATELY, or a Pardon given to a Great Hero, who has done so much for the State."

Netanyahu has been accused of accepting bribes and doing favors for wealthy ally

As Axios explained, the Israeli prime minister is currently being tried on multiple charges, including bribery, fraud and breach of trust.

The charges stem from allegations that Netanyahu received more than $200,000 worth of gifts from wealthy business figures.

What's more, prosecutors also contend that the prime minister gave regulatory benefits to a telecommunications magnate that were worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

That is said to have been done in exchange for having favorable press coverage of Netanyahu posted on a website owned by the tycoon.

Trump denounces charges against Netanyahu as being "politically motivated"

However, Trump declared in his social media post that efforts to prosecute the prime minister are "politically motivated" and "a travesty."

"It was the United States of America that saved Israel, and now it is going to be the United States of America that saves Bibi Netanyahu," the president stated.

It is unclear how Trump intends to "save" Netanyahu, and the president did not explain what actions he might take on the prime minister's behalf.
