Trump campaign attacks DeSantis for spreading lies in Iowa

December 10, 2023

Former President Donald Trump's campaign claims that Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) is spreading lies about him in Iowa.

The comments came in a statement on Saturday following DeSantis campaigning in the state.

The statement

"Safe and secure elections are the bedrock of our democracy," the campaign said in a statement.

"Either the DeSantises are purposefully spreading false information or they are too uninformed about the Iowa Caucus to properly educate caucus-goers on how to participate in the process. These people have no idea what they’re doing and are simply engaging in play-pretend politics," it added.

Disputing the polls

"The voters actually make these decisions, not pundits or pollsters. I'm sick of hearing about these polls," DeSantis said about recent polls favoring Trump.

"I'm looking forward to Iowa and New Hampshire. The voters are gonna be able to speak," he continued.

Reynolds endorses DeSantis

"Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds touted Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis for how he handled the COVID-19 pandemic in her endorsement of him in Des Moines and didn't shy away from calling out former president Donald Trump," the Center Square reported in November.

"When the Trump administration let Fauci lead their response, Ron had the courage to say 'not in Florida,'" Reynolds said Monday evening, calling the Florida governor "One of the most effective leaders I have ever seen."

"Ron is focused. He is principled. He is results-driven. And in short, what I love the most about Ron is he gets things done," Reynolds said.

Trump has continued to lead Iowa polls, with both DeSantis and former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley fighting for second. The primary in Iowa is just weeks away, serving as the first vote in 2024 that could lead to a massive shift of momentum if DeSantis could appear to close the gap on Trump.

Trump's campaign statement appears to both include a note of fear and another attack in the ongoing battle to help the former president win the first primary state and set the tone for a GOP nomination in 2024.
