The 2024 campaign of former President Donald Trump says that it has been hacked.

Not only that, but the campaign says that the hacker actually released internal campaign documents to Politico.

Politico was the first to report this news.

Per the outlet:

Former President Donald Trump’s campaign said Saturday that some of its internal communications had been hacked. The acknowledgment came after POLITICO began receiving emails from an anonymous account with documents from inside Trump’s operation.

Here's what we know so far:

There are a couple of big questions here. One is who is behind the hacking, and the other is what was taken.

Starting with the second question, Politico says that it has been receiving "internal communications from a senior Trump campaign official."

This, according to the outlet, included "a research dossier the campaign had apparently done on Trump’s running mate, Ohio Sen. JD Vance, which was dated Feb. 23." It also included "a research document about Florida Sen. Marco Rubio."

The hacker also claimed to have a "variety of documents from [Trump’s] legal and court documents to internal campaign discussions."

It is unclear whether Politico received any of these documents.

The suspect:

As for the first question, Politico says that the hacker only identified himself as "Robert." But, the Trump campaign actually believes that Iran was behind the attack.

Trump campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung has put out a statement, saying:

These documents were obtained illegally from foreign sources hostile to the United States, intended to interfere with the 2024 election and sow chaos throughout our Democratic process. On Friday, a new report from Microsoft found that Iranian hackers broke into the account of a "high ranking official" on the U.S. presidential campaign in June 2024, which coincides with the close timing of President Trump’s selection of a vice presidential nominee.

At the time of this writing, it is unclear whether Iran's involvement has been confirmed. It has. though, been reported that Iran has been targeting Trump for some time.

Trump, himself, released a statement on the matter on Saturday evening.

He wrote:

We were just informed by Microsoft Corporation that one of our many websites was hacked by the Iranian Government - Never a nice thing to do! They were only able to get publicly available information but, nevertheless, they shouldn’t be doing anything of this nature. Iran and others will stop at nothing, because our Government is Weak and Ineffective, but it won’t be for long. What Iran doesn’t realize is that I will make the World a better and safer place, and that’s good for them, also!
