This past July, former New York Republican Rep. George Santos began serving his 87-month federal prison sentence for wire fraud and aggravated identity theft.

Yet in a move which left Washington rocked, President Donald Trump recently ordered that Santos be released.

Trump says Santos "was somewhat of a 'rogue'"

According to Fox News, Trump explained his decision to commute Santos' decision in a post Friday post on his Truth Social platform.

"George Santos was somewhat of a 'rogue,' but there are many rogues throughout our Country that aren't forced to serve seven years in prison," the president began.

Trump then went on to reference allegations that Connecticut Sen. Richard Blumenthal lied about his military service in Vietnam.

"This is far worse than what George Santos did, and at least Santos had the Courage, Conviction, and Intelligence to ALWAYS VOTE REPUBLICAN!" the president insisted.

"George has been in solitary confinement for long stretches of time and, by all accounts, has been horribly mistreated. Therefore, I just signed a Commutation, releasing George Santos from prison, IMMEDIATELY," Trump concluded.

Former congressman thanks God and Trump

Santos was quick to express gratitude for the commutation in a social media post of his own, writing, "Yesterday, I was given something I never thought I’d have again: a true second chance at life. A chance to grow, to change, and to walk a better path."

"First and foremost, I want to thank our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, for never abandoning me. I’m far from perfect. I’ve made mistakes, I’ve stumbled, but I never lost faith in Him. His grace carried me when I couldn’t carry myself, and for that, I am eternally grateful," Santos declared.

"I also want to express my deepest gratitude to President Donald J. Trump. Earlier today, I had the honor of speaking with him personally, a conversation I will never forget," the former congressman continued.

Santos describes time spent in solitary confinement

"In that moment, I saw not only the strength of a great leader, but the heart of a man who believes in mercy, in redemption, and in the promise that America gives everyone, the promise of a second chance," Santos went on to add.

The disgraced ex-lawmaker reiterated that message during an appearance on "Fox & Friends Weekend," saying that he had reconnected with God while spending 41 days in solitary confinement.

"I have a lot to prove to a lot of people, and I have to make sure President Trump understands that I am not going to disappoint him," Santos asserted.
