President Donald Trump is continuing his overhaul of the National Security Council (NSC).

CNN reports that the administration had just put more than 100 NSC officials on leave.

This comes after the major NSC shakeup, which saw Trump remove NSC director Mike Waltz.

Trump has replaced Waltz with Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who is acting in an interim capacity. Trump said to expect him to pick a more permanent replacement within 6 month's time.

The latest

According Axios, the Trump administration is currently restricting the NSC, and the placing of the more 100 individuals on leave is towards this end.

Per the outlet:

Trump's White House sees the NSC as notoriously bureaucratic and filled with longtime officials who don't share the president's vision. A White House official involved in the planning characterized the reorganization as Trump and Rubio's latest move against what they see as Washington's "Deep State."

The outlet goes on to quote the source as calling the NSC "the ultimate Deep State." The individual said, "The NSC is the ultimate Deep State. It's Marco vs. the Deep State. We're gutting the Deep State."

The move - to place over 100 NSC employees on leave - will essentially cut the council in half. This, as we will see, comes after Trump and his administration had already ordered a fairly sizable cut.

Rubio, in a statement, said, "The right-sizing of the NSC is in line with its original purpose and the president's vision. The NSC will now be better positioned to collaborate with agencies."

Background

This is just Trump's latest attempt to rein in the NSC.

Fox News reports:

The latest efforts to slim down a federal agency come weeks after Trump announced former National Security Advisor Mike Waltz would depart his post at the White House overseeing the agency and serve as UN ambassador. Waltz himself began the streamlining process in January, when, in one of his first moves as Trump's national security adviser, he ordered 160 NSC staffers off the job pending a comprehensive review of the agency's alignment with Trump's agenda.

The outlet goes on to provide more details about the restructuring.

It writes:

Additionally, the restructuring will move Andy Barker, national security advisor to Vice President JD Vance, and Robert Gabriel, assistant to the president for policy, into roles serving as deputy national security advisors.

Suffice it to say that this is a massive change, perhaps one of the biggest that the Trump administration is making to the D.C. establishment.
