Trump cuts off UCLA from $200 million in research funding
The administration of President Donald Trump just cut the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) off from about $200 million in federal research funding.
The move, according to Breitbart News, came on Thursday.
It came after the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) determined that UCLA had violated the civil rights of some of its students.
The Trump administration has suspended an estimated $200 million in medical, science, and other federal grants to UCLA, alleging that the university has discriminated in its admissions process and failed to "promote a research environment free of antisemitism." pic.twitter.com/f6L97vfqmk

Fourteenth Amendment violation
Breitbart News separately reports on the violation.
Per the outlet:
In April 2024, UCLA allowed anti-Israel students to set up an “encampment” in the center of campus. The university surrounded it with metal barricades and allowed activists to patrol the encampment boundary. The activists barred Jewish students who would not renounce support for Israel from crossing through the space. They also assaulted members of the public, including journalists exercising First Amendment rights.
UCLA was hit with a discrimination lawsuit, and the university thought that it was off the hook after it settled the lawsuit.
However, the DOJ quickly hit UCLA with civil rights violation.
The DOJ, in a letter to UCLA, wrote:
The Department has concluded that UCLA’s response to the protest encampment on its campus in the spring of 2024 was deliberately indifferent to a hostile environment for Jewish and Israeli students in violation of the Equal Protection Clause [of the Fourteenth Amendment] and Title VI [of the Civil Rights Act of 1964].
$200 million halted
As a result of this finding, the Trump administration withdrew about $200 million in federal research funding for UCLA.
The Daily Bruin reported:
UCLA received a notice that the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health, along with other agencies, are suspending their funding to UCLA, according to the email. The move comes after the United States Department of Justice alleged in a letter to UC President Michael Drake on Tuesday that UCLA had violated federal civil rights law due to its treatment of Jewish and Israeli students during the Palestine solidarity encampment.
Democrats are not happy about the situation.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) wrote:
Freezing critical research funding for UCLA – dollars that were going to study invasive diseases, cure cancer, and build new defense technologies – makes our country less safe. It is a cruel manipulation to use Jewish students’ real concerns about Antisemitism on campus as an excuse to cut millions of dollars in grants that were being used to make all Americans safer and healthier. This is the action of a president who doesn’t care about students, Californians, or Americans who don’t comply with his MAGA ways.
Trump, at the time of this writing, has not responded.
