Trump unveils deal to slash expensive costs for IVF and fertility treatment drugs
During the 2024 election, President Donald Trump repeatedly expressed his support for the in vitro fertilization process, also known as IVF, as part of his broader pro-life stance and desire to see more healthy American babies born in the United States.
On Thursday, Trump announced a deal he'd struck with a major pharmaceutical company to significantly reduce the cost of IVF and fertility drugs, according to The National News Desk.
The deal follows executive action taken by Trump earlier in the year to help dramatically expand access to IVF and fertility drugs for American families who are struggling to conceive naturally.
Trump makes it easier for Americans to have babies
"We're here today to announce a historic victory for American women, mothers, and families," President Trump said during an Oval Office news conference. "With the actions I will outline this afternoon, we'll dramatically slash the cost of IVF, and many of the most common fertility drugs. For millions of Americans, prices are going way down."
"We want to make it easier for all couples to have babies, raise children, and start the families they've always dreamed about," the president continued.
Trump also revealed that the Food and Drug Administration was working swiftly to approve a new fertility treatment already being used in Europe, as well as efforts to encourage health insurance providers to cover the costs of IVF and fertility treatments, which are often quite expensive.
"We're also taking historic steps to vastly expand access to insurance coverage for fertility care, including IVF," the president added. "Effective immediately, for the first time ever, we will make it legal for companies to offer supplemental insurance plans specifically for fertility."
"You're doing God's work here," Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. told Trump. "You've made peace in the Middle East, which is beyond anybody's imagination -- and now, you're giving millions of Americans a chance to have babies."
Reduced pricing, swifter FDA approval, and increased insurance coverage
According to a White House fact sheet, the Trump administration reached a deal with EMD Serono, a leading manufacturer of fertility medications, to secure what is known as "most-favored-nation" pricing for its products.
That arrangement will drastically reduce the costs of IVF and fertility drugs, and the discount could grow even larger if the treatments are obtained through the newly launched TrumpRx website, which was designed to help Americans save money on prescription medications.
The fact sheet also highlighted how the FDA was working to substantially cut through the bureaucratic red tape that has slowed the review and approval of a new fertility drug that has already been approved for use in Europe.
The release further detailed how relevant federal departments and agencies were taking action to make IVF and fertility treatments available for coverage under health insurance plans in the same way that dental and vision are covered.
Trump previously expanded access to IVF
All of this follows an executive order that President Trump issued in February that was aimed at expanding access to IVF for American families and reducing the costs of such treatments.
"Because we want more babies, to put it very nicely," Trump said of his action at the time. "And for this same reason, we will also allow new parents to deduct major newborn expenses from their taxes, so that parents that have a beautiful baby will be able, so we’re pro family."
"But the IVF treatments are expensive," he added. "It’s very hard for many people to do it and to get it, but I’ve been in favor of IVF, right from the beginning."
