Trump distances himself from pressure campaign on Gov. DeSantis to name Lara Trump as Sen. Rubio's replacement
After President-elect Donald Trump nominated Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) to be his Secretary of State, a pressure campaign was launched by some of Trump's allies to convince Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis to name his daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, to fill the impending vacancy.
On Monday, Trump seemed to distance himself from that effort and acknowledged that it was solely the governor's choice on who should succeed Rubio as the Sunshine State's next senator, MSNBC reported.
That said, the incoming president also appeared to indicate that he would like to see Lara, who recently stepped down as the co-chair of the Republican National Committee, serving as a senator from Florida.
Trump says he's uninvolved in DeSantis decision to fill Rubio's Senate vacancy
During a press conference on Monday at Mar-a-Lago, Fox News reported that President-elect Trump was asked if he expected Gov. DeSantis to select his daughter-in-law Lara as Sen. Rubio's replacement.
"No, I don’t. I probably don't. But I don’t know," Trump replied. "Ron’s doing a good job. That’s his choice -- nothing to do with me."
He went on to praise Lara for the work she did as the RNC co-chair and said, "Lara's unbelievable. She was incredible. The job she did at the RNC …. she is so highly respected."
Trump further suggested that his daughter-in-law was in high demand, as he revealed, "I also know that Lara got so many other things. I mean, she's got so many other things. People want her to be on television. They want to give her contracts. She's got so many other things that she's talking about."
As for Rubio and DeSantis, he added, "He leaves a vacancy in Florida and Ron's going to have to make that decision. And he'll make the right decision."
Lara Trump says she open to serving as Florida's senator
Politico reported last week that Lara Trump, upon announcing her resignation from the RNC, said that "the job I came to do is now complete" as she pointed to increased voter turnout and fundraising, improved election integrity, and, of course, the GOP sweep of control over the House, Senate, and White House.
Asked by an Associated Press reporter about the possibility of being chosen as Sen. Rubio's replacement, she responded, "If I’m being completely transparent, I don’t know exactly what that would look like. And I certainly want to get all of the information possible if that is something that’s real for me. But yeah, I would 100% consider it."
The outlet noted that while President-elect Trump has appeared to not get publicly involved in the matter of who will succeed Rubio in the Senate, several of his allies, including tech billionaire and unofficial advisor Elon Musk, have been openly urging Gov. DeSantis to pick Lara for the position.
What has DeSantis said?
As for Gov. DeSantis, he has kept his cards close to his vest but did offer some clues in an X post about the qualities he was looking for in a replacement for Sen. Rubio that would probably be announced early next month.
"We have already received strong interest from several possible candidates, and we continue to gather names of additional candidates and conduct preliminary vetting," the governor wrote in the mid-November post. "More extensive vetting and candidate interviews will be conducted over the next few weeks, with a selection likely made by the beginning of January."
"Florida deserves a Senator who will help President Trump deliver on his election mandate, be strong on immigration and border security, take on the entrenched bureaucracy and administrative state, reverse the nation’s fiscal decline, be animated by conservative principles, and has a proven record of results," he added.
