Trump drops Ed Martin's nomination for U.S. Attorney
President Donald Trump's nomination for U.S. Attorney, Ed Martin, was facing an uphill battle in his confirmation process, especially as top GOP leaders began turning cold on supporting him.
According to Fox News, Trump shocked Washington D.C. this week in announcing that he pulled Martin's nomination ahead of a potential Senate Judiciary Committee vote.
Martin was described as a "former defense attorney who represented Americans charged in the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the Capitol, for the role," who has held the responsibilities of interim U.S. Attorney.
Amid concerns from lawmakers across the party, the Senate has essentially stalled Martin's confirmation process, which ultimately led to Trump pulling his name and heading in a different direction.
What's going on?
There were several concerns about Martin's possible confirmation coming from both sides of the aisle.
Illinois Senator Dick Durbin (D) opposed Martin's confirmation, claiming that Martin told the Senate Judiciary Committee several false statements.
Earlier this week, Trump finally stepped in a rang the exit bell for Martin, explaining why he made the decision to pull his name in a statement to reporters at the White House.
"He wasn't getting the support from people that I thought," Trump told reporters. "You know, he's done a very good job. Crime is down 25% in DC during this period of time… I can only lift that little phone so many times of the day. But we have somebody else."
The president also expressed his disappointment in the fact that he had to pull Martin's name due to a lack of critical support.
"I have to be straight. I was disappointed," Trump said. "A lot of people were disappointed. But that's the way it works. Sometimes, you know, that's the way it works. And he wasn't rejected, but we felt it would be very – it would be hard. And we have somebody else that will be announcing over the next two days who's going to be great."
Judge Jeanine is in
Trump also stunned D.C. and his supporters just hours after Martin's name was pulled by announcing that he appointed Fox News personality Judge Jeanine Pirro for United States Attorney for the District of Columbia.
He heaped praise on Pirro in a social media post.
"I am pleased to announce that Judge Jeanine Pirro will be appointed interim United States Attorney for the District of Columbia. Jeanine was Assistant District Attorney for Westchester County, New York, and then went on to serve as County Judge, and District Attorney, where she was the first woman ever to be elected to those positions," Trump wrote.
He added, "In addition to her Legal career, Jeanine previously hosted her own Fox News Show, Justice with Judge Jeanine, for ten years, and is currently Co-Host of The Five, one of the Highest Rated Shows on Television. Jeanine is incredibly well qualified for this position, and is considered one of the Top District Attorneys in the History of the State of New York. She is in a class by herself. Congratulations Jeanine!"
