Trump, Elon Musk furious that teens who attacked former DOGE staffer got no jail time
President Donald Trump and former DOGE head Elon Musk were furious on Tuesday after a judge sentenced two teens who attacked and brutally beat former DOGE staffer Edward Coristine to probation only, no jail time.
The teens, both 15, beat Coristine in front of his girlfriend in August as they were attempting to carjack the couple.
The brutal act mobilized Trump to federalize Washington, D.C. and bring in the National Guard to help restore order.
Rehabilitation
The male teen got 12 months probation, and the female teen got nine months. Her lawyer had asked for 4.5 months.
The two teens were ordered not to contact each other and not to spend time in Washington other than for school, job, or family obligations.
Associate Judge Kendra Briggs of the Superior Court of the District of Columbia said she hoped to give the teens a chance to be rehabilitated, which was the primary aim of juvenile court.
"Senseless crime"
Trump reacted to the verdict during remarks to reporters in the White House, saying, “They beat the hell out of this guy. There was many people against this one guy, who was really trying to protect his girlfriend. Wow, that’s terrible. I think the judge should be ashamed of himself. That’s a big problem.”
Musk's reaction on X was similarly indignant. “This was a racist verdict by a racist judge. The simple test to apply is if the races has been reversed, the White kids would be in prison. Equal justice for all!”
Coristine said, “To this day, they’ve only caught two out of the ten. Eight of them remain on the street. That night could’ve gone far differently. Think of your daughters and mothers. The same group attacked people before and after us, breaking ribs and stomping heads. This senseless crime must be stopped.”
No justice
It sure doesn't seem like teens who see nothing wrong with being part of a violent gang of thugs who roam around beating people and committing crimes should be treated like innocent first-time teen offenders.
It's a perfect example of how teens sometimes deserve to be tried as adults. These kids should not be on the streets making mayhem; they should be locked up so they can't do this to anyone else.
Surely they will be arrested again at some point, and this time, they could be facing federal police or National Guard troops.
Sadly, this verdict does not give justice to Coristine for the brutality inflicted on him.
Maybe one day, if the "rehabilitation" doesn't work.
