Trump endorses former congressman Mike Rogers in Michigan Senate race

 March 12, 2024

President Trump has endorsed former Michigan congressman Mike Rogers in the state's pivotal Senate race, potentially clearing a crowded field of Republican primary candidates.

Democrats are lining up behind congresswoman Elissa Slotkin (Mi.) in their fight to hold onto retiring Senator Debbie Stabenow's (D) seat.

Trump makes critical endorsement

The open seat is a top target for Republicans as they look to flip the Senate, with an electoral map widely seen as unfavorable to the Democrats.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said Rogers "knows how to win."

"Mike has served his Country during a career loaded up with accolades and wins, from the Army to Congress, and now, hopefully, the U.S. Senate," Trump wrote.

"Mike Rogers will be a Great and Powerful Senator for Michigan, and has my Complete and Total Endorsement. HE KNOWS HOW TO WIN!"

Rogers, who endorsed Trump last month, responded, "Thank you, Mr. President! Excited to get to work with you to Get America and Michigan Back on Track!”

The primary falls in August. The other candidates include former congressman Peter Meijer, who was forced out after voting to impeach Trump over January 6th, and Justin Amash, a vocal critic of Trump who left the GOP in protest during Trump's presidency.

Former Trump critic

A former FBI agent, Rogers was chairman of the House Intelligence Committee when the NSA spying scandal exploded during the Obama presidency, later joining CNN as a national security commentator after leaving Congress.

Trump's nod points to a showdown between two former members of the intelligence community, as the Democratic frontrunner, Elissa Slotkin, is an ex-CIA analyst.

Rogers is also being backed by the Senate GOP's campaign arm, which has been working closely with Trump to line up candidates for November.

But some Republicans have criticized Trump's endorsement, with Senator Rand Paul (R-Ky.) calling Rogers "a never Trumper, and a card carrying member of the spy state that seeks to destroy Trump."

Rogers is a former critic of Trump, declaring in 2022 that his "time had passed." But in a January op-ed for the Daily Caller, he urged Republicans to unite behind Trump and praised his "strong leadership."

"We all know we can do better; we just had it under President Trump," he wrote.
