Trump fires top Labor Dept. official amid claim jobs numbers are 'rigged' for 'political purposes'

On Friday, the Labor Department's Bureau of Labor Statistics released a dismal initial jobs report for July, which followed close on the heels of a recent massive downward revision of prior months' jobs reports, all of which prompted a substantial stock market sell-off.

Within hours of that report's release, President Donald Trump ordered the immediate firing of the Biden-appointed BLS commissioner, according to Breitbart.

The sudden termination was accompanied by Trump's accusations that the top Labor official had a history of using "faked" and "manipulated" jobs numbers for "political purposes" to benefit former Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Joe Biden, and conversely, to harm him.

BLS commissioner fired "IMMEDIATELY" by Trump

Friday's jobs report from the BLS claimed that only 73,000 new jobs were created in July, while the unemployment rate ticked up to 4.2%, both of which were far worse than the numbers that had been predicted, which sparked a huge down day on the markets when combined with the uncertainty of a slew of new tariffs taking effect.

In a Truth Social post, President Trump wrote, "I was just informed that our Country’s 'Jobs Numbers' are being produced by a Biden Appointee, Dr. Erika McEntarfer, the Commissioner of Labor Statistics, who faked the Jobs Numbers before the Election to try and boost Kamala’s chances of Victory."

"This is the same Bureau of Labor Statistics that overstated the Jobs Growth in March 2024 by approximately 818,000 and, then again, right before the 2024 Presidential Election, in August and September, by 112,000," he continued. "These were Records -- No one can be that wrong?"

"We need accurate Jobs Numbers. I have directed my Team to fire this Biden Political Appointee, IMMEDIATELY," Trump said. "She will be replaced with someone much more competent and qualified. Important numbers like this must be fair and accurate, they can’t be manipulated for political purposes."

"McEntarfer said there were only 73,000 Jobs added (a shock!) but, more importantly, that a major mistake was made by them, 258,000 Jobs downward, in the prior two months. Similar things happened in the first part of the year, always to the negative," the president added, along with an obligatory shot at Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell's refusal to lower interest rates for him after dropping them ahead of the 2024 election.

Trump claims jobs numbers are "RIGGED" for partisan purposes

President Trump wasn't finished there, though, as he proceeded to rail against the alleged partisan political interference of the BLS in its jobs reports in a follow-up post less than a couple of hours later.

"In my opinion, today’s Jobs Numbers were RIGGED in order to make the Republicans, and ME, look bad -- Just like when they had three great days around the 2024 Presidential Election, and then, those numbers were 'taken away' on November 15, 2024, right after the Election, when the Jobs Numbers were massively revised DOWNWARD, making a correction of over 818,000 Jobs -- A TOTAL SCAM," Trump wrote.

He added, "Jerome 'Too Late' Powell is no better! But, the good news is, our Country is doing GREAT!"

McEntarfer Fired for "consistently getting it WRONG"

Of course, much of the media was quick to rush to McEntarfer's defense, with claims that President Trump fired her for making him look bad politically, even as the downward and upward revisions were "normal and expected."

That didn't fly with Deputy White House Chief of Staff Taylor Budwich, though, as he lambasted the media's coverage in an X post that linked to one such report, and wrote of the now-former commissioner, "Wrong. She was fired after consistently getting it WRONG. You don’t get to be this bad at your job and keep it. She was missing the mark for more than a year by HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF JOBS. Unacceptable."

"Policy makers look to these reports to inform decisions (like rate cuts by the Fed). We need accuracy, and President Trump will restore competency and accuracy to this critical agency," he added.
