Trump forces out U.S. attorney

Erik Seibert, the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, has just resigned.

According to Fox News, it appears that Seibert was pressured to do so by the administration of President Donald Trump for an unwillingness to bring charges against New York Attorney General Letitia James (D).

It appears, however, that there may be more to the story.

Background

Just before the weekend, reports emerged indicating that the Trump administration was looking to fire Siebert.

ABC News, for example, reported:

ABC News has reported that Trump is expected to fire U.S. Attorney Erik Siebert after investigators were unable to find incriminating evidence of mortgage fraud against New York Attorney General Letitia James, according to sources.

Trump said, bluntly, "I want him out," referring to Siebert.

The little twist here is that this comes just months after Trump nominated Siebert for the position.

It turns out that, like with some of Trump's other nominations, Siebert is not the man that Trump thought he was.

He resigned?

There are reports out there claiming that Siebert resigned shortly after Trump's remarks.

The New York Post, for instance, reported:

US Attorney Erik Siebert, whose investigation into James has yet to result in criminal charges, notified employees at his Alexandria office of his decision to resign after Trump made clear he didn’t want him around, according to multiple outlets. “This evening, I submitted my resignation as Interim U.S. Attorney for [Eastern District of Virginia],” Siebert wrote in an email to staffers.

President Trump, however, is disputing this.

He did so on social media, writing:

Today I withdrew the Nomination of Erik Siebert as U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, when I was informed that he received the UNUSUALLY STRONG support of the two absolutely terrible, sleazebag Democrat Senators, from the Great State of Virginia. He didn’t quit, I fired him! Next time let him go in as a Democrat, not a Republican. Thank you for your attention to this matter. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN! President DJT

Whatever the case may be, whether resigned or was removed, Siebert's stint with the Trump administration is over.
