Trump green lights operation that targeted top Al Qaeda leader in Syria
President Donald Trump might have his sights focused on issues here at home, which is amazing, but make no mistake -- he's also watching the movements of America's enemies and responding accordingly.
That was evidenced in recent days as reports emerged that the U.S. military successfully eliminated a top military leader of Hurras al-Din, a Syrian branch of Al-Qaida.
The terrorist branch of Al Qaeda reportedly dissolved in January, but its leaders and members still pose a great threat to the United States and the Western world in general.
U.S. Central Command, or CENTCOM, which oversees U.S. military operations in the Middle East, confirmed that the terrorist leader had been killed.
What's happening?
In a recent statement confirming the kill, CENTCOM said U.S. military forces "conducted a precision airstrike in Northwest Syria, targeting and killing Muhammed Yusuf Ziya Talay, the senior military leader of the terrorist organization Hurras al-Din."
General Michael Erik Kurilla, CENTCOM commander, also released a statement following the successful mission.
"As we have said in the past, we will continue to relentlessly pursue these terrorists in order to defend our homeland, and U.S., allied, and partner personnel in the region," the general said.
VOA News reported:
Since Hurras al-Din announced in late January that it was dissolving itself, U.S. airstrikes have killed several of the group's leaders, according to CENTCOM.
On Feb. 22, it said a "precision airstrike" had killed Wasim Tahsin Bayraqdar, a leader of the group, which the U.S. classifies as a terrorist organization.
American military forces remain in Syria to this day, though a much smaller number. The forces are there as part of a 2014 agreement between coalition forces with the mission of taking out top terrorist leaders.
Hurras al-Din announced that it had dissolved after the toppling of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
Social media reaction
Users on social media reacted to CENTCOM's announcement, which was complete with video footage of the mission.

"Now that is precision. We have come a long way. A lot less collateral damage. No one else hurt or killed and no one’s property destroyed. The vehicle that was hit can literally just be towed away," one X user wrote.
Another X user wrote, "They are probably so surprised - normally they just get checks from USAID."
