Trump has Zelensky removed from the White House
President Donald Trump had Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky removed from the White House on Friday.
The two, according to the New York Post, were supposed to meet up in order to sign a mineral rights deal - in exchange for the hundreds of billions of dollars that the American taxpayers have given to Ukraine.
Ultimately, however, no deal got signed, because things went off the rail during an Oval Office press conference.
Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance accused Zelensky of being "disrespectful," and not long thereafter the Ukrainian president was, literally, shown the door.
Here's what happened:
The Post gives an overview of how the Oval Office press conference played out.
Per the outlet:
The Oval Office meeting began with warm exchanges and handshakes, with Trump at one point saying of Zelensky: “I think he’s a great guy.” But matters took an ugly turn after Zelensky attempted to explain Russian President Vladimir Putin’s lack of diplomacy to Vance.
It was at this point that Vance accused Zelensky of being "disrespectful" by trying to "litigate the matter" before the American press. Trump ended up getting involved in the back-and-forth after Zelensky, with a quasi-threat, seemed to suggest that the U.S. "will feel" the effects of the Russia-Ukraine war.
Apparently, it was not long after the shouting stopped that Trump and his team decided that Zelensky needed to exit the White House - immediately.
He was shown the door, and then Trump released this message:
We had a very meaningful meeting in the White House today. Much was learned that could never be understood without conversation under such fire and pressure. It’s amazing what comes out through emotion, and I have determined that President Zelenskyy is not ready for Peace if America is involved, because he feels our involvement gives him a big advantage in negotiations. I don’t want advantage, I want PEACE. He disrespected the United States of America in its cherished Oval Office. He can come back when he is ready for Peace.
More details
Secretary of State Marco Rubio has provided more details about what exactly happened on Friday.
Rubio said:
Apologize for turning this thing into the fiasco for him that it became. There was no need for him to go in there and become antagonistic.
Rubio proceeded to explain how Zelensky, by trying to get Trump to condemn Russian President Vladimir Putin, essentially upended negotiations that the Trump administration is leading to end the Russia-Ukraine war.
The Post reports:
When you start talking about those things aggressively, and the president is a deal maker, you’re not gonna get people to the table. You start to perceive that maybe Zelensky doesn’t want a peace deal, he says he does but maybe he doesn’t. And that active, open undermining of efforts to bring about peace is deeply frustrating for everyone that’s been involved in communications with them leading to today.
It is a complex situation, for sure, and it appears that Zelensky went about things in all the wrong way, which is what ultimately led to him being booted from the White House.
