Trump heard discussing potential Russian peace deal in hot mic comments
French President Emmanuel Macron and other allied leaders speak with President Donald Trump about the ongoing war in Ukraine.
The event included a hot mic moment in which Trump expressed a theory to Macron about how the conflict could end.
Trump says Putin "wants to make a deal for me"
According to Fox News, the incident took place on Monday when the president could be heard remarking, "I think [Russian President Vladimir Putin] wants to make a deal."
"I think he wants to make a deal for me, you understand that?" the president asked before adding, "As crazy as it sounds."
Fox News noted that Trump's comments came up when Macron was interviewed by NBC News host NBC's Kristen Welker, who inquired, "What went through your head when he said that to you?"
"At the end of the day, if we have a deal, which is compliant with this long-standing and robust peace, this is a great news," Marcon said in response.
"And your president, indeed, is very confident about the capacity he has to get this deal done. Which is good news for all of us, and can break this, I would say, this daily killings," he stressed.
President looks forward to trilateral meeting
A White House spokesperson also addressed the hot mic comments, telling Fox News, "As President Trump has said, he has a good relationship with President Putin, and only he was able to bring President Putin to the table for a peace deal."
"European leaders recognize that after three years of killing and deadlock under weak Joe Biden, there has been more progress towards peace than ever before because of this President’s leadership," the spokesperson insisted.
For his part, Trump told "Fox & Friends" on Tuesday that he is looking forward to a trilateral meeting involving himself, Putin, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
"They haven’t exactly been best friends," Trump said of the two leaders. "Maybe they're getting along a little bit better than I thought. Otherwise, I wouldn't have set up the two [of them] meeting. I would have set up a [trilateral meeting]."
Trump promises that no U.S. troops will be sent to Ukraine
Meanwhile, the president made clear during the interview that any future agreement would not involve American troops being deployed to Ukraine, asserting, "You have my assurance."
"I'm just trying to stop people from being killed. They're losing 5,000 to 7,000 people a week in that ridiculous war that should have never happened," Trump maintained.
"If we had a normal president — not even a great president — if we had a normal president, it wouldn't have happened," he went on to add.
