Trump urges Israeli courts to cancel trial, drop criminal charges against PM Netanyahu
U.S. President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have one big thing in common -- both have endured state prosecution for alleged legal violations that they and their supporters insist are bogus and politically motivated by partisan opponents.
On Wednesday, Trump sought to intercede on Netanyahu's behalf and urged the Israeli courts to cancel an impending trial and drop the disputed corruption charges against him, Breitbart reported.
Trump faced multiple civil and criminal cases last year at both the state and federal levels, but all of that was either dropped or placed on hold after he won the presidency for a second time in November.
Trump says Netanyahu targeted by a "ridiculous Witch Hunt"
In a lengthy Truth Social post Wednesday evening, President Trump wrote, "BREAKING NEWS … I was shocked to hear that the State of Israel, which has just had one of its Greatest Moments in History, and is strongly led by Bibi Netanyahu, is continuing its ridiculous Witch Hunt against their Great War Time Prime Minister!"
"Bibi and I just went through HELL together, fighting a very tough and brilliant longtime enemy of Israel, Iran, and Bibi could not have been better, sharper, or stronger in his LOVE for the incredible Holy Land," he continued. "Anybody else would have suffered losses, embarrassment, and chaos!"
"Bibi Netanyahu was a WARRIOR, like perhaps no other Warrior in the History of Israel, and the result was something that nobody thought was possible, a complete elimination of potentially one of the biggest and most powerful Nuclear Weapons anywhere in the World, and it was going to happen, SOON!" Trump insisted. "We were fighting, literally, for the Survival of Israel, and there is nobody in Israel’s History that fought harder or more competently than Bibi Netanyahu."
"Netanyahu’s trial should be CANCELLED"
President Trump stated in the post, "Despite all of this, I just learned that Bibi has been summoned to Court on Monday for the continuation of this long running, (He has been going through this 'Horror Show' since May of 2020 -- Unheard of! This is the first time a sitting Israeli Prime Minister has ever been on trial.), politically motivated case, 'concerning cigars, a Bugs Bunny doll, and numerous other unfair charges' in order to do him great harm."
"Such a WITCH HUNT, for a man who has given so much, is unthinkable to me. He deserves much better than this, and so does the State of Israel," he continued. "Bibi Netanyahu’s trial should be CANCELLED, IMMEDIATELY, or a Pardon given to a Great Hero, who has done so much for the State."
"Perhaps there is no one that I know who could have worked in better harmony with the President of the United States, ME, than Bibi Netanyahu," Trump added. "It was the United States of America that saved Israel, and now it is going to be the United States of America that saves Bibi Netanyahu. THIS TRAVESTY OF 'JUSTICE' CAN NOT BE ALLOWED!"
The cases against Netanyahu
The Times of Israel reported that President Trump's Truth Social post about Prime Minister Netanyahu's impending corruption trial was an "unprecedented intervention in the Israeli justice system by an American president."
It further noted that while the Israeli PM had not yet publicly commented on Trump's post, a spokesman for his Likud Party did broadly share a Hebrew translation of the president's remarks on social media.
Netanyahu, who has long denied any wrongdoing and argued that the criminal charges brought against him by political opponents are false, faces three separate corruption cases based on allegations that date back several years. Notably, The Times reported in 2023 that Israeli judges told prosecutors that at least one, if not more, of the charges against the PM should be dropped due to a lack of evidence.
In the first case, he faces charges of fraud and breach of trust for allegedly accepting expensive gifts from a Hollywood mogul friend in exchange for assistance with his U.S. visa and tax issues, while the second case involves similar charges for allegedly agreeing to take legislative action to harm one Israeli media outlet in exchange for positive coverage from a rival newspaper.
The third, and arguably most serious case, involves allegations that Netanyahu authorized regulations that benefited an allied shareholder of the Bezeq telecommunications company in exchange for favorable news coverage from that ally's media company.
