Trump underscored the paramount importance of choosing a running mate capable of assuming the presidency in case of an emergency.

The remarks

Bartiromo questioned Trump about the specific criteria he considers when identifying a suitable running mate.

Trump responded, stating, "Always, it's got to be who is going to be a good president. Obviously, you always have to think that because in case of emergency. Things happen, right? No matter who you are, things happen. That's got to be No. 1."

Trump emphasized the critical nature of ensuring that his chosen running mate possesses the qualities needed to effectively handle the responsibilities of the presidency under unforeseen circumstances.

The names

Despite shedding light on his considerations, Trump revealed that he would not be announcing his vice presidential pick "for a little while."

The former president indicated that he has a pool of potential candidates and a wealth of ideas, mentioning ongoing discussions with various individuals.

He acknowledged reaching out to South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott, expressing his belief that Scott would be a stronger candidate for him than for himself.

"You know, I called [South Carolina Sen.] Tim Scott and people like Tim Scott, and I said you're a much better candidate for me than you are for yourself," Trump said. "When I watched him, he was fine. He was good, but he was very low-key."

Continuing the discussion on potential running mates, Trump also commended South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem. He highlighted her public statement affirming that she would not run against him, citing her belief that she could not defeat him.
