Trump team launches new PAC to back primary challenge against GOP Kentucky Rep. Thomas Massie

President Donald Trump is not fond of having his executive authority or policy agenda challenged, especially by his fellow Republicans, and has no qualms about calling out and attempting to take down those who obstruct and oppose him.

The latest example is Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY), whom Trump and his allies have now targeted for a primary challenge and possible removal from office in 2026, Breitbart reported.

Trump's decision to back a primary challenge against Massie was spurred by the congressman's vocal opposition to the recent airstrikes against Iran's nuclear facilities, but the two have been sporadically feuding since the president's first term over the Kentucky Republican's tendency to vote "No" on major spending bills.

New super PAC formed to primary Massie

Axios reported that two of President Trump's senior political advisors, Chris LaCivita and Tony Fabrizio, have launched a new political action committee dubbed Kentucky MAGA, which aims to identify and support a pro-Trump GOP challenger against Rep. Massie in the Bluegrass State's May 2026 primary election.

The effort is ostensibly supported by internal polling that suggests Trump and his policies are more popular with Kentuckians than Massie, and that a Trump-backed challenger could defeat the incumbent in next year's primary contest.

LaCivita, who vowed to spend "whatever it takes" to oust Massie from office, said in a statement, "Massie's long-time opposition to President Trump's working family tax cuts -- and really anything to do with President Trump -- is coming to an end."

The senior Trump advisor shared the Axios article on his X account and, undoubtedly referencing the "f--k around, find out" phrase, or FAFO, wrote, "Here’s the FO -- Scoop: Trump launches MAGA PAC in effort to oust Rep. Massie from Congress."

Massie opposed Trump's airstrikes against Iran

The impetus for this effort to primary Rep. Massie is his stated opposition to the Trump-ordered airstrikes on Iran's nuclear facilities, which the libertarian-leaning congressman denounced as "not Constitutional."

Days earlier, amid rumors of possible U.S. intervention in the Iran-Israel conflict, Massie posted, "This is not our war. But if it were, Congress must decide such matters according to our Constitution. I’m introducing a bipartisan War Powers Resolution tomorrow to prohibit our involvement. I invite all members of Congress to cosponsor this resolution."

Breitbart noted that several staunchly anti-Trump Democrats -- including "squad" members like Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Ilhan Omar (D-MN), and Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) -- were quick to signal their support for the Republican congressman's legislation.

Trump targets Massie for removal from office

On Sunday, President Trump derided Rep. Massie on Truth Social as "not MAGA" and disliked by the president's supporters because he's a "grandstander" who always votes "No" on important bills and, in this instance, stands with Iran and its nuclear ambitions over the interests of the U.S. and Israel, and wrote, "The good news is that we will have a wonderful American Patriot running against him in the Republican Primary, and I’ll be out in Kentucky campaigning really hard."

In a Monday morning follow-up post, Trump said in all caps, "Get this 'bum' out of office, asap!!!" and further continued his withering criticism of the "loser" and "third-rate" congressman in a separate post on Tuesday.

Axios noted that this is far from the first time that Trump and Massie have tangled, as Trump previously called for Massie to be removed from Congress in 2020 over his opposition to pandemic relief spending, in 2024 over his GOP primary endorsement of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, and again earlier this year after he voted against a bill to keep the government funded and avoid a shutdown.

Massie, however, has easily survived primary challenges over the past three election cycles, and he dismissed the Trump camp's supposed polling numbers with a word of caution to any would-be challengers, as he told Axios, "Any serious person considering running should spend money on an independent poll before letting swampy consultants take them for an embarrassing ride."
