Trump orders investigation of Democratic fundraising network ActBlue
During his first term in office, President Donald Trump was dogged by since-discredited allegations that he benefited from foreign election interference.
Yet in a bombshell move, Trump has just called on the Department of Justice (DOJ) to investigate foreign involvement in Democratic fundraising.
Memorandum focuses on left-wing fundraising network
According to Just the News, Trump signed a memorandum this past Thursday which calls on the DOJ to look at whether criminal charges should be brought against ActBlue, a network which fundraises on behalf of left-wing candidates.
Just the News recalled how ActBlue came under scrutiny last year by members of the House Administration, Judiciary and Oversight committees.
A joint report released by the committees found that ActBlue had changed its donations standards twice during the 2024 election cycle so as to make them "more lenient."
"Internal documents produced to the Committees by ActBlue and its fraud-prevention contractor, Sift, demonstrate a lack of commitment to stopping fraud and paint a picture of complacency on ActBlue’s fraud-prevention team," the report stated.
"Put simply, the documents reflect a fundamentally unserious approach to fraud prevention at ActBlue—one that has left the door open for large-scale fraud campaigns on Democrats’ top fundraising platform," it added.
Federal law bans straw contributions
Trump's memorandum points out that "[f]ederal law (52 U.S.C. 30121 and 30122) strictly prohibits making political contributions in the name of another person, as well as contributions by foreign nationals."
"Notwithstanding these laws designed to protect American democracy, press reports and investigations by congressional committees have generated extremely troubling evidence that online fundraising platforms have been willing participants in schemes to launder excessive and prohibited contributions to political candidates and committees," it states.
Just the News noted that Trump's memo was welcomed by Missouri Republican Rep. Eric Burlison, who told the outlet, "Where there's smoke, there’s probably fire."
House Speaker Mike Johnson also spoke up in a social media post, writing, "ActBlue has been caught funneling money from foreign countries, blatantly exploiting our campaign finance laws. This is not only unethical—it’s ILLEGAL."
