Trump popularity increases despite tariff blowback: poll

The American people have delivered their own verdict on President Trump's controversial tariffs - and it's not the one you would expect from the doom-and-gloom predictions of the media.

The shock poll from DailyMail.com/J.L. Partners found that Trump has become more popular since announcing his "Liberation Day" tariffs on April 2.

Trump's approval rating rose to 53%, an increase of four points compared to the previous week. More Americans support Trump's tariffs than oppose them, but many remain undecided.

The survey was of over 1,000 registered voters and was conducted from March 31 to April 3.

Trump receives verdict

The tariffs include a universal 10% tax on imports, with certain countries, particularly in Asia, facing higher rates.

36% of registered voters support Trump's universal 10% tariff on imports, compared to 28% who oppose them, and 36% are unsure. Similarly, 39% of voters are in favor of raising tariffs on imported goods in general, while 37% are against and 24% are unsure.

The results suggest that most Americans are at least keeping an open mind about the president's bold plan to bring manufacturing back to America.

Of course, public opinion is always changing, and Trump's tariffs have only just begun, so it is difficult to say how long Americans will tolerate them.

Trump's critics have blasted his protectionist agenda as a throwback to 19th-century economics that will raise prices and potentially cause a recession.

The tariffs have caused turmoil in the stock market, sending 401(k)s tumbling.

"Hang tough"

Trump promises that the sweeping tariffs will revitalize America's blighted manufacturing sector and bring in government revenue that could help cover the cost of tax cuts.

Trump is not hiding the fact that his "economic revolution" will cause disturbances, but he encouraged the American people to "hang tough" as the 10% tariff went into effect on Saturday.

"THIS IS AN ECONOMIC REVOLUTION, AND WE WILL WIN. HANG TOUGH, it won’t be easy, but the end result will be historic. We will, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!!!" Trump wrote on Truth Social.

While many Americans are concerned about the impact Trump's tariffs will have on prices, the average American is also keenly aware that too many good jobs have left the country due to globalization. Some, particularly blue-collar Americans, have borne the costs of free trade more than others have.

Certainly, your average economist who writes for the Wall Street Journal has not suffered under the current economic order.

It's not surprising that Americans are willing to take a risk with Trump to restore the middle class - because for many, the status quo is simply not working.
