Trump promises to 'solve' Chicago crime amid news of Labor Day weekend violence
Amid his successful federal law enforcement intervention in Washington, D.C., President Donald Trump’s attentions are turning to Chicago, where unrelenting violent crime has him pondering a similar mobilization in the Windy City.
With more than 50 people shot and several killed in Chicago over the Labor Day weekend, Trump pledged on Tuesday to “solve” the problem quickly, just as he says he has done in the nation’s capital, as Breitbart reports.
Holiday weekend carnage unfolds
It was not long after the long holiday weekend got underway that the initial fatality occurred, as Breitbart reported separately, with a 25-year-old woman gunned down late Friday evening.
The onslaught did not stop there, as a 29-year-old man lost his life in a drive-by shooting in the 500 block of North Sawyer just after 11:00 a.m.
Other victims of the weekend’s bloodshed included a 43-year-old female who was reportedly set upon by five gun-wielding men and a 46-year-old man who fell victim in a separate, unrelated incident.
In the wee hours of Sunday morning, a 33-year-old man suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the head during an argument, adding to the tragic tally that continues to outrage Trump.
By the time the official last weekend of summer drew to a close, the total number of shooting victims for the multi-day span grew to at least 54, with nine deaths registered among them, including a 14-year-old boy in North Lawndale.
Trump, Chicagoans have seen enough
Amid the weekend’s bloodshed, Trump took to his Truth Social network to decry the continued lawlessness he believes state and local Democrat leaders are either unwilling or incapable of stopping.
“At least 54 people were shot in Chicago over the weekend, 8 people were killed,” Trump began, offering what turned out to be an underrepresentation of the sad situation.
He continued, “[Illinois Gov. JB] Pritzker needs help badly, he just doesn’t know it yet. I will solve the crime problem fast, just like I did in DC. Chicago will be safe again, & soon. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAINI!”
It is not just Trump who believes that urgent, extraordinary law enforcement intervention is needed to address the violence gripping Chicago, with local resident Osiris King lamenting to Fox News, “When I was growing up back in the early 2000s…it was bad, but the kids nowadays, they’re just wreaking havoc in all of the neighborhoods.”
Former National Guard officer Dennis White opined on the potential benefit of an injection of federal assistance, stating, “We need, I’d say, about 10,000 police,” adding that the removal of illegal immigrants as well as renewed resources toward mental health treatment would also go a long way toward addressing the problem.
Liberal opposition persists
Despite what many suggest is a dire need for a federal crime crackdown in Chicago similar to the one that has yielded notable results in D.C., Windy City Mayor Brandon Johnson remains defiantly opposed, shouting at a rally this weekend that he would accept “No militarized force in the City of Chicago.”
With Pritzker’s opposition to a D.C.-style takeover already on record, Johnson’s recent executive order declaring that local police will refuse collaboration with federal agents, and Trump’s apparent determination to clean up Chicago once and for all, the stage appears to be set for a political -- and perhaps legal -- confrontation of epic proportions.
