Trump pulls Elise Stefanik's nomination for U.N. ambassador over narrow House majority

President Trump has withdrawn Rep. Elise Stefanik (Ny.) from consideration to be the United Nations ambassador, saying Republicans cannot afford to lose control of her seat as they navigate a 218-213 majority.

"As we advance our America First Agenda, it is essential that we maintain EVERY Republican Seat in Congress," Trump announced on Truth Social.

Stefanik's nomination withdrawn

Trump's decision blindsided Stefanik, leaving her "crushed" and "scrambling" to change Trump's mind, Axios reported. For Trump, it simply comes down to math.

As he later explained at the White House on Friday, "it's politics 101."

“I really appreciate her doing it,” Trump added. “She’s doing me a big favor when she does it, because she was all set to go to the United Nations, and she would have dealt with Putin, and Zelensky and everybody else, and she would have been very effective. But we don’t want to take any chances, because it is tight.”

Considered a Republican rising star, Stefanik has become known as a vocal defender of President Trump and Israel. Although she was expected to be confirmed easily, the GOP's tight majority had kept Stefanik's nomination on hold for months.

Stefanik was preparing to resign after special elections in Florida on Tuesday, April 1. While both districts are pro-Trump, Republicans have recently grown concerned about the fundraising in Florida's 6th district, which was formerly represented by Michael Waltz, Trump's national security adviser.

Trump won Stefanik's upstate New York district by 30 points in the fall.

“I have been proud to be a team player,” Stefanik said on Fox News’ Hannity of Trump's decision.

“The president knows that. And he and I have had multiple conversations today, and we are committed to delivering results on behalf of the American people.”

Dems pounce on reversal

After months in the political wilderness, Democrats are pouncing on Trump's reversal, taunting House Republicans as vulnerable and scared.

“The Republican agenda is extremely unpopular, they are crashing the economy in real time and House Republicans are running scared,” House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-Ny.) said. "What happened to their so-called mandate?”

Stefanik gave up her position as the third-highest ranking Republican to serve in Trump's Cabinet. The president said he has already spoken to House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) about placing her back in leadership.

"There are others that can do a good job at the United Nations. Therefore, Elise will stay in Congress, rejoin the House Leadership Team, and continue to fight for our amazing American People. Speaker Johnson is thrilled!” Trump wrote.
