Trump pushes back against the idea that he's defying the Supreme Court
President Donald Trump says that not only is he not defying the U.S. Supreme Court but that he would "never defy" it.
Fox News reports that Trump said as much during a recent interview with Time magazine.
The interview comes, among other things, amid the situation involving Kilmar Abrego Garcia.
Garcia is an alleged MS-13 member whom the Trump administration deported from America to El Salvador. The deportation was challenged in the courts, and the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the Trump administration must "facilitate" Garcia's return. Garcia, at the time of this writing, remains in El Salvador.
"I believe in..."
Trump was interviewed by Time's Eric Cortellessa, and he, during the interview, asked Trump whether he believes in the U.S. judiciary.
"Sure, I believe in the court system," the president said, adding, "I never defy the Supreme Court. I wouldn't do that. I'm a big believer in the Supreme Court, and have a lot of respect for the justices."
None of this seems as if it is that groundbreaking, but the political left has been trying to push the narrative that Trump is defying the courts.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), for example, recently threatened that Trump will face consequences if he disobeys the Supreme Court.
"But if the president disobeys a Supreme Court order, extraordinary action will be necessary," he said.
A surprising move by Trump
To demonstrate Trump's sincerity, reports have emerged indicating that Trump himself is actually open to bringing Garcia back to the United States.
"President Donald Trump said he doesn’t mind the idea of bringing Kilmar Abrego Garcia back to the United States to face the justice system," the Daily Caller reports.
This is likely because Trump believes that, with Garcia's alleged criminal rap sheet, a conviction for his crimes would be extremely likely. The Daily Caller describes Garcia as "a suspected MS-13 gangbanger, alleged wife-beater, and illegal migrant."
Trump, however, has said:
That’s not my determination. It’s something that, frankly, bringing him back and retrying him wouldn’t bother me, but I leave that up to my lawyer. You could bring him back and retry him.
This has come to the surprise of many, as both Trump and members of his administration have vigorously stood behind the deportation of Garcia. Still, whether or not the administration will go ahead and return Garcia to the United States remains to be seen. The legal dispute continues to play out in the courts.
