Trump quashes hopes of signing Ukraine-Russia peace deal at Mar-a-Lago over Thanksgiving
Hopes of a Ukraine-Russia peace deal by Thanksgiving, courtesy of President Donald Trump, have been dashed in a single Truth Social post this week.
According to the New York Post, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s chief advisor, Andriy Yermak, was conducting an interview with the outlet during which he was optimistic about a peace deal to end the four-year war that would be hammered out at Mar-a-Lago this week.
However, Trump announced in his Truth Social post that he had different plans -- plans that meant a no-go on a peace deal this week, which was crushing for Yermak and presumably the rest of the Ukrainian government.
Yermak told the Post that the 19-point proposal to end the bloody war between Ukraine and Russia would be adopted as a joint US-Ukraine plan, complete with a signature from President Zelensky.
What's going on?
Trump, in his post, said that he was sending Army Sec. Dan Driscoll to meet Ukrainian officials while sending Special Presidential Envoy Steve Witkoff to Moscow to continue talks for a potential peace deal.
Those plans mean that any hopes of a deal by Thanksgiving, signed by both presidents, is off the table.
"I look forward to hopefully meeting with President Zelenskyy and President Putin soon, but ONLY when the deal to end this War is FINAL or, in its final stages," Trump wrote, adding "let’s all hope that PEACE can be accomplished AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!"
President Trump's post was so shocking to Yermak that he reportedly appeared "gutted" by the bombshell update, even asking the Post for an interview update in 24 hours to allow time to assess the news.
"It’s necessary to wait and to understand with which position Driscoll will come, and to talk with Witkoff to understand which position he is going with to Moscow," Yermak said.
He added, "What is good with President Trump is that he can change his position very quick."
Each day matters
Yermak and other Ukrainian officials wanted the deal to be well on its way this week, as every new day in Ukraine brings with it an increased body count and more horrors of war.
"Every day it’s a risk to lose best people, children. We have no time," Yermak said.
Of course, the 19-point plan is nothing more than a very rough draft, as several more points need to be hammered out before it goes to the next level.
It'll be interesting to see if Trump sticks with his plan or decides to change it up. Only time will tell.
