Trump rakes in $2 million hours after his indictment

If there was any upside for Donald Trump to becoming the first president in American history to be arrested by his political opponent, it was the rush of sympathy -- and money -- that came in from his supporters.

Trump raked in over $6 million in less than a week since the news of his indictment for mishandling classified information, his campaign announced.

About $2 million of that was raised in a single evening at his Bedminster, New Jersey golf club, where Trump delivered a fiery speech hours after he was arraigned in Florida.

The rest, which is the bulk of it, came from digital fundraising -- a testament to Trump's powerful grassroots support.

Trump's fundraising haul

Trump's campaign didn't wait to boast about his fundraising haul since "deranged" Biden prosecutor Jack Smith "took the unprecedented step of weaponizing the justice system to attack his political opponent."

"In a clear sign of the steadfast support President Donald J. Trump enjoys from grassroots Patriots across the nation, over $4.5 million has been raised from digital fundraising, with an additional $2.1 million raised at President Trump's event at Bedminster last night," the release said.

The haul proves that "the American people will not stand for this corrupt attempt to interfere in the 2024 election against the leading candidate for President who will demolish the Deep State and finish the job of draining the Swamp," the statement added.

Most of Trump's donations come from small donors, while the donor class has largely flocked to alternatives like Ron DeSantis. Still, Trump's successful fundraiser at Bedminster, which was the first of his campaign, shows his continued ability to attract big donors, Politico noted.

Trump thanks "mutants"

The money will no doubt help Trump pay off some of the mountainous legal bills he has incurred from his years-long war with the "deep state."

In his speech Tuesday night, Trump said he was being targeted by "communists" who have been trying to destroy him through seven years of relentless "psychological warfare" campaigns, starting with the Trump-Russia "collusion" hoax.

"They want to silence me because I will never let them silence you," he told his supporters.

Trump raised $15 million within two weeks of his first indictment in New York over "hush money" payments to Stormy Daniels. The former president celebrated his latest indictment bounce in a post on Truth Social thanking "mutants" and "misfits" for making it happen.

"REALLY BIG FUNDRAISING, EVEN GREATER POLLS, SINCE THE RADICAL LEFT INDICTMENT HOAX WAS INITIATED BY THE MISFITS, MUTANTS, MARXISTS, & COMMUNISTS!" Trump wrote. "THANK YOU !!!"
