Thus far, former President Donald Trump is refusing to take back his endorsement of Mark Robinson to be North Carolina's next governor.

This is despite the fact that Robinson recently found himself at the center of a major scandal.

Trump weighed in on the situation, according to The Hill, during a press conference that he gave on Thursday in New York City.

In response to a question from a reporter about the Robinson situation, Trump replied, "I don’t know the situation."

Background

The scandal was first reported by CNN.

Per the outlet:

Mark Robinson, the controversial and socially conservative Republican nominee for governor of North Carolina, made a series of inflammatory comments on a pornography website’s message board more than a decade ago, in which he referred to himself as a “black NAZI!” and expressed support for reinstating slavery, a CNN KFile investigation found.

Robinson, for his part, has denied the contents of the report and has insisted that he will move forward with his campaign. Additionally, it appears that he is pursuing legal action against CNN.

He said:

We are in talks right now. Everything up to legal counsel to take CNN to task for what they have done to us. We are going after them. We are going to go after them for what they’ve done.

It remains to be seen if Robinson will be able to do so.

Several big losses

Despite Robinson's attempt to push back on CNN's report, his campaign has lost several key personnel as well as supporters.

Among those supporters is Trump. Back in March, the former president announced his endorsement of Robinson.

U.S. News, at the time, reported:

At a rally Saturday in Greensboro, Trump compared Robinson, who is Black, to the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., the famed civil rights leader. Trump referred to Robinson as “Martin Luther King on steroids.” Trump said Robinson wasn’t sure how to respond when Trump compared him to the legendary civil rights leader, telling him: “I think you’re better than Martin Luther King. I think you are Martin Luther King times two.” “You should like it,” Trump said.

More recently, many have been calling for Trump to pull his endorsement of Robinsons, but, thus far, Trump has refused to do so, instead saying that he is unfamiliar with the situation.

Trump, though, does appear to have distanced himself somewhat from Robinson. The Hill reports that Robinson was not at Trump's recent rally in North Carolina, despite being at a rally the previous month.
