Trump rules out potential workaround for running in 2028

At the same time Democrats are cooking up every conspiracy theory in the book regarding a possible third term for President Donald Trump, his MAGA base is praying that it somehow pans out.

While it's certainly technically possible to make a third term in the White House happen, President Trump doesn't seem like he's willing to go that route, according to The Hill, telling reporters aboard Air Force One that it's "pretty clear" he can't do that.

Trump, of course, was citing the U.S. Constitution's language regarding running for a third term in office.

That hasn't stopped the president from suggesting he could go for a third term in the past, even going as far as trolling his haters -- and pleasing his supporters -- with "Trump 2028" hats.

What's going on?

During the Air Force One ride, Trump was asked by reporters about his thoughts on seeking a third term -- somehow. Some have suggested he's prepared to run alongside Vice President J.D. Vance, win, and then have Vance resign immediately, making him president once more.

The Hill noted:

Talk of Trump running again in 2028 picked up steam again after Steve Bannon, a Trump ally and former top adviser, said in a recent interview there was a “plan” to keep Trump in office, though he did not elaborate.

That plan was recently shot down by the president, telling reporters he believes the American people would think it's a bit "too cute" and not be on board with it.

During his session with reporters, Trump boasted about his approval numbers, suggesting it's too bad he can't run again.

“It’s a very interesting thing. I have the best numbers for any president in many years,” Trump said.

"And I would say that, if you read it, it’s pretty clear: I’m not allowed to run. It’s too bad,” Trump added. “But we have a lot of great people."

The Speaker agrees

Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) told reporters he has spoken to President Trump about running for a third term, noting that the Constitution simply doesn't allow it -- at least in the conventional way.

“It’s been a great run, but I think the president knows — and he and I’ve talked about the constrictions of the Constitution, as much as so many of the American people lament that," Johnson told reporters.

The MAGA world is still hopeful that Trump will find a way.

Only time will tell if he goes that route.
