Trump says new portrait of Biden will feature autopen
President Donald Trump told the Daily Caller on Friday that a new portrait of former President Joe Biden will feature the autopen he used to sign much of the legislation enacted under his tenure.
"We put up a picture of the autopen," Trump said, showing a sketch to the reporter.
The portrait, which is scheduled to be hung in about two weeks, will be part of the Presidential Hall of Fame in the Rose Garden.
It wasn't clear whether it would just be a picture of the autopen or of Biden with it.
Under investigation
Biden's use of the autopen to sign orders and legislation is currently under investigation by Congress.
Investigators want to know if Biden was fully aware of what was signed with the autopen after reports from some in his administration that he didn't always know what was signed.
If the autopen was used without his authorization, it represents a major misuse of his executive authority.
For Biden's legacy, it represents a scandal and yet more questions about whether he was actually capable of serving as president.
"Very controversial"
Trump showed different options for the portrait and said it would be black and white but "not the one with the smile."
"This is going to be very controversial," he said.
The reporter, Reagan Reese, said, "It's going to be funny."
Either way, it is a major diss of Biden by Trump on a scale that has not really been seen by a president.
While conservatives will no doubt agree with Reese that it is funny to depict Biden this way, it could lower the level of propriety even more, so that Democrats will feel more than comfortable to reciprocate (and probably drag things down even more) if and when they get back into the White House one day.
