Trump shuts down 13 Mexico-US airline routes
The administration of President Donald Trump has decided to shut down over a dozen Mexico-U.S. airline routes.
Fox Business reports that the move was recently announced by Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy.
A separate report from Breitbart News reveals that Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum is not too happy about the situation.
Joe Biden and Pete Buttigieg were too weak to stand up to Mexico when they walked all over our bilateral aviation agreement.
These deals are binding, and like our trade agreements, @POTUS is going to enforce them. America First! https://t.co/UPmdHaqxml

"These deals are binding..."
Duffy announced the Trump administration's decision to shut down the airline routes on social media on Oct. 29, 2025.
He wrote:
Joe Biden and Pete Buttigieg were too weak to stand up to Mexico when they walked all over our bilateral aviation agreement. These deals are binding, and like our trade agreements, President Trump is going to put America First and enforce them.
Duffy went on to explain, "Until Mexico stops the games and honors its commitments, we will continue to hold them accountable. No country should be able to take advantage of our carriers, our market, and our flyers without repercussions."
Fox details the impacted routes.
It reports:
The disapproved routes involve airports servicing Mexico City. The impacted routes include: An Aeroméxico service between Benito Juarez International Airport (MEX) and San Juan, Puerto Rico; A Volaris service between Benito Juárez International Airport and Newark; Viva Aerobus proposed services between Felipe Angeles International Airport (NLU) and Austin, New York, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami and Orlando; Aeroméxico services between Felipe Angeles International Airport and Houston and McAllen.
Sheinbaum's outraged
This past week, Sheinbaum went public with her criticism of the decision by the Trump administration to shut down the 13 air routes.
Breitbart reports:
On Wednesday morning, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum claimed that she was outraged by what she called a unilateral measure by the U.S. government. She stated that her country was “no one’s piñata… Mexico must be respected.” Sheinbaum claimed that the concerns Duffy raised had been previously addressed.
The outlet goes on to quote directly from Sheinbaum.
Breitbart reports:
“We are not in agreement with the U.S. Department of Transportation,” she said. Sheinbaum said she had already instructed her diplomats to request an appointment with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio to see if they could meet with Duffy to iron out the issue.
It is unclear, at the time of this writing, how, if at all, the Trump administration has responded to this request.
