Many people have advocated for the U.S. government to take over Washington D.C., and the Trump administration seems as if it's keen on making that happen.

According to the New York Post, President Donald Trump recently told reporters aboard Air Force One that he believes it's in the city's best interest for the government to assume control, especially given its decline over the past decade. 

Trump cited safety concerns and the city's growing homelessness problem, which is undoubtedly fueled by open-air drug use and everything else that happens in run-down cities.

When it was founded, the nation's capital was under federal control.

What's going on?

Trump held nothing back when he spoke to reporters about possibly turning the city over to the U.S. government.

"I think that we [the federal government] should govern the District of Columbia... I think that we should run it strong, run it with law and order, make it absolutely flawless... We could save people from getting killed. They have a great police department there. Somehow, they're not utilized properly," the president said.

The president also expressed his concerns over the way the city looks when foreign dignitaries visit, especially focusing on how rise in tent cities and other homelessness problems are an eyesore.

"I like the mayor, I get along great with the mayor, they're not doing the job - too much crime, too much graffiti, too many tents on the lawns, there's magnificent lawns and there's tents. It's a sad thing, homeless people all over the place. We've gotta take care of the homeless. But we can't have that in Washington, D.C."

Trump added, "When they come in to see me - like Macron is coming, the Prime Minister of the UK is coming, all these people coming over to see me... you can't have tents all over your beautiful, once magnificent houses and lawns. You just can't do it."

Social media reacts

Users across social media weighed in on Trump's idea of a federal takeover of the city, with many supporting the idea.

"I predicted this. And Trump should absolutely do it," one X user wrote.

Another X user wrote, "That really is the only answer. The jail there was a leftist disgrace with the J6ers, too."

Only time will tell if Trump and Congress make it happen, but it definitely seems like it would be a step in the right direction for the city.
