Trump surprisingly taps Morgan Ortagus for administration role
President-Elect Donald Trump is bringing back Morgan Ortagus.
The president announced his decision to make her the Deputy Special Presidential Envoy for Middle East Peace in a Truth Social post that he released on Friday.
You can read Trump's full statement for yourself here.
Suffice it to say that this has come as a surprise to many, as Trump and Ortagus have not always seen eye to eye. It appears, however, that Trump is ready to give her a second chance.
"I am pleased to announce..."
Trump, in his announcement, made it clear that he has not forgotten his history with Ortagus.
He wrote:
I am pleased to announce Morgan Ortagus as Deputy Special Presidential Envoy for Middle East Peace, to the Honorable Steven Witkoff. Early on Morgan fought me for three years, but hopefully has learned her lesson.
Many have asked why Trump is moving forward with Ortagus if he has reservations about her.
The president-elect went on to explain his decision, writing:
These things usually don’t work out, but she has strong Republican support, and I’m not doing this for me, I’m doing it for them. Let’s see what happens. She will hopefully be an asset to Steve, a great leader and talent, as we seek to bring calm and prosperity to a very troubled region. I expect great results, and soon!
We will have to see if Trump gets his wish.
Background
Fox News reports that Ortagus, in Trump's first administration, was his State Department spokesperson.
"Ortagus, an active U.S. Navy Reserve intelligence officer, served as spokesperson at the Department of State from 2019 to 2021, where she was a member of Trump's Abraham Accords team," the outlet reports.
It continues, "Previously, she worked at the Department of the Treasury as a financial intelligence analyst and served as Deputy U.S. Treasury Attaché to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia from 2010 to 2011. She is also the founder of Polaris National Security and the host of 'The Morgan Ortagus Show' on Sirius XM."
It is not exactly clear where Trump and Ortagus clashed heads. The disagreement appears to date back to the 2016 presidential election. Ortagus, at the time, was not exactly a "MAGA" Republican.
It is well-known that Trump values loyalty tremendously, and he never forgets disloyalty. This is what makes it so surprising that Trump is willing to put his differences with Ortagus aside and to give her a second chance. Let's see if this pays off for Trump.
