This coming February will mark two years since Russian President Vladimir Putin launched his invasion of neighboring Ukraine.

Yet in what would be a stunning development, President-elect Donald Trump recently told Americans that it is time for the conflict to end.

Trump: "It's got to stop"

According to Newsmax, Trump made the statement while addressing reporters during a press conference at his Mar-a-Lago resort on Monday.

"It's got to stop," the president-elect said of the fighting and compared gruesome images taken in Ukraine to photographs from the American Civil War.

Although Trump did not indicate whether a settlement would involve Ukraine ceding territory to Russia, he did comment on the country's condition.

"I mean, there are cities that there's not a building standing, it's a demolition site," the president-elect said of the damage that Ukraine has sustained. This is far from being the first time Trump has addressed the war, as Time magazine noted that the president-elect previously did so earlier this month.

Trump won't say whether he has spoken with Putin since the election

"Zelenskyy and Ukraine would like to make a deal and stop the madness," Trump wrote in a post on the social media platform Truth Social.

"There should be an immediate ceasefire and negotiations should begin," he continued. "I know Vladimir [Putin] well. This is his time to act. China can help. The World is waiting!"

Trump also spoke with NBC News host Kristen Welker, telling her that a reduction in assistance to Ukraine could be in the cards.

The president-elect refused to confirm or deny that he has been in contact with Russia's President leader since his win last month.

Report: Ukraine's government has attempted to "win over" Trump

"I don’t want to say that," Trump told Welker. "I don't want to say anything about that because I don’t want to do anything that could impede the negotiation."

Meanwhile, Time reported in September that Ukraine's government had undertaken an effort to "win over" the then-candidate.

"There is a level of hope for Trump," one Ukrainian source was quoted as telling the magazine. "Of course we could be mistaken. We don’t know how divisive he will be with the West at large. He might weaken it."

"But someone has to stop this war, and Kamala Harris does not seem like she would play that role. Trump in theory could make some drastic moves, at least that’s our perception," the source added.
