Since beginning his political career, President Donald Trump has frequently spoken of the need to protect American manufacturing jobs.

The president returned to that theme this past week when he confirmed a deal which has left his supporters cheering.

New partnership unveiled between U.S. Steel and Japanese firm Nippon Steel

According to Fox Business, Trump announced on social media that an agreement between U.S. Steel and the Japanese firm Nippon Steel had been approved.

The deal, which will involve Nippon Steel purchasing a 20% share of U.S. Steel, is expected to create roughly 70,000 new American jobs and bring $14 billion into the U.S. economy during a 14-month timeframe.

Under its provisions, U.S. Steel is set to retain its current headquarters and leadership team while also upgrading and expanding domestic production facilities.

U.S. Steel says it "greatly appreciates President Trump's leadership"

Fox Business pointed out that U.S. Steel was quick to put out a statement in which it praised the president for his role in approving the agreement.

"President Trump is a bold leader and businessman who knows how to get the best deal for America, American workers and American manufacturing," the company announced.

"U.S. Steel will remain American, and we will grow bigger and stronger through a partnership with Nippon Steel that brings massive investment, new technologies and thousands of jobs over the next four years," it continued.

"U.S. Steel greatly appreciates President Trump's leadership and personal attention to the futures of thousands of steelworkers and our iconic company," the steel manufacturer stressed.

Nippon Steel celebrated the deal as well, stating that it "applauds President Trump for his bold action to approve our partnership with U. S. Steel."

Some steel workers were "elated" to hear news of agreement

Meanwhile, Pittsburgh's WTAE reported that some of those employed at the U.S. Steel plant located in Braddock, Pennsylvania "were elated" to hear details of the new partnership.

"It's a huge victory because we're getting ready to celebrate our 150th anniversary," steel worker Glenn Thomas was quoted as telling the local news outlet.

Andrew Macey offered a similar perspective, saying, "You take the stress of every day, not knowing that you’ll have a job tomorrow or you’ll have a future. That’s all over now."

WTAE pointed out that for his part, President Trump is planning to hold a rally in Pittsburgh on May 30 to celebrate last week's corporate agreement.
