President Donald Trump, during his campaign, promised a swift end to the Ukraine-Russia war, and talk of ending the war has ramped up in recent days.

However, according to reports, Trump issued a stark warning this week when he met with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer at the White House, proclaiming that a peace deal would be reached in Ukraine "fairly soon" or not at all.

Trump announced his vision of what's happening in Ukraine with the peace deal during a joint press conference this week.

The president also revealed that talks with Russia to broker a peace deal for Ukraine are in their "advanced" stages.

What's going on?

At the joint presser, Trump insisted that that the talks were happening at very high levels, but warned that there is a very narrow window of opportunity to broker a peace deal between Moscow and Kyiv.

Starmer was at the White House to reportedly encourage Trump to continue the U.S. government's support for Ukraine's efforts in its war.

The 47th US president also expressed confidence that Russian President Vladimir Putin won’t push to resume the war if a truce can’t be reached. “I think he’ll keep his word,” said Trump on Putin.

"I’ve known him for a long time now, we had to go through the Russian hoax together," Trump said, referring to Putin. “To begin the process of ending this spiral of death, I had historic back to back calls with President Putin."

Trump said he and his team are "working very hard" to bring the war in Ukraine to an end, but many on the left are worried that he's ceding too much to Putin in any type of peace deal.

The 47th president added, "I think we’ve made a lot of progress, and I think it’s moving along pretty rapidly, and I want to thank all of the people that are here that have been working on it, and we’ll let you know what happens."

Starmer's thoughts

Starmer warned that giving Putin too much in a peace deal would set a dangerous precedent.

"There's a famous slogan in the United Kingdom from after the Second World War, that is, that we have to win the peace. And that's what we must do now, because it can't be peace that rewards the aggressor," Starmer said.

However, he praised Trump for the "tremendous opportunity" to even begin talks to broker a deal.

Only time will tell if the Trump administration is able to pull off a peace deal. It would be absolutely momentous if they can.
