Trump's 'big, beautiful' bill runs into House roadblock

President Donald Trump's "big, beautiful" bill has already run into some fairly serious problems.

Just the News reports that, on Friday, the bill suffered "a major setback," as it failed to get through the House Budget Committee.

This is the committee that it need to get through in order to get to the House floor, where it would be voted on by the entire House of Representatives.

As we will see, the bill failed, in part, because a significant number of Republicans voted against it.

Five dissenters

The committee vote was 16-21 with five Republicans opposing it.

Fox News identifies the five individuals as:

Republican Reps. Chip Roy of Texas, Josh Brecheen of Oklahoma, Andrew Clyde of Georgia and Ralph Norman of South Carolina all voted against the legislation.

It is particularly interesting that, despite the fact that the bill is opposed by some Republicans, no Democrat supported it. Surely, part of the reason the Republicans are opposing it is because it contains some items that traditional Republicans might not like - items that Democrats might unite behind.

Just the News reports on how:

GOP House members, particularly moderates vs. fiscal conservatives, have wrangled key matters in the bill, which preserves Trump's 2017 tax cuts, such as changes to Medicaid and state and local tax deductions, known as SALT.

The committee is expected to reconvene on Sunday evening to see if they can make further progress.

"Grandstanders"

Trump, perhaps anticipating that the bill was going to fail, took to social media, early on Friday, to encourage Republicans to unite behind the bill.

He wrote:

Republicans MUST UNITE behind, “THE ONE, BIG BEAUTIFUL BILL!” Not only does it cut Taxes for ALL Americans, but it will kick millions of Illegal Aliens off of Medicaid to PROTECT it for those who are the ones in real need. The Country will suffer greatly without this Legislation, with their Taxes going up 65%. It will be blamed on the Democrats, but that doesn’t help our Voters.

The president continued by calling out what he referred to as Republican "grandstanders.

He said:

We don’t need “GRANDSTANDERS” in the Republican Party. STOP TALKING, AND GET IT DONE! It is time to fix the MESS that Biden and the Democrats gave us. Thank you for your attention to this matter!

Trump has, at the time of this writing, not released any further messages on the situation. He is likely working behind the scenes to try to make the bill happen.
