Tuberville blasts FEMA hurricane response, suggests it constitutes 'treason'

The federal response to Hurricane Helene continues to draw criticism as well as outrage, and now, a prominent Republican lawmaker is adding his voice to the chorus of extreme discontent.

Sen. Tommy Tuberville gave an interview to Mobile, Alabama radio station FM Talk 106.5 on Friday, and in it, he suggested that the Biden administration has engaged in conduct worthy of prison, as Breitbart reports.

Outrage grows

The controversy to which Tuberville responded during the aforementioned radio interview has continued to build in the aftermath of the storm that has left portions of the southeastern United States devastated.

As the New York Post reported, criticism began to build last week when Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayoras indicated that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) lacked funds to provide necessary aid for the remainder of the hurricane season.

Such a scenario is viewed by many as particularly egregious, considering that the agency has already used $1.4 billion in federal money to address the migrant influx and its resulting consequences.

Tuberville holds forth

The Republican senator from Alabama referenced Mayorkas specifically when discussing the federal disaster response to Helene, telling the host, “We're in a tough situation, Jeff and we've been lied to. We've been scammed the American people have been scammed.”

“So, what has happened is, Mayorkas and this whole group have lied to the American people for three and a half, going on four years. He kept saying our borders closed and this and that. Now, you know, we all been looking for, where are they getting this money from to take care of these people?” Tuberville said.

He continued, “They have been taking money from FEMA and paying these illegal immigrants and taking care of them. And it's all coming out in the light.”

“And people now look, well, wait a minute, this is for a natural disaster, not a manmade disaster like the border. But they're corrupt. Every day, something comes up now that they've been exposed, that they've been doing, they shouldn't be doing.” Tuberville continued.

The senator then declared, “And people should be going to jail. This is treason. And not taking care of these people up and down the East Coast because of this.”

Not alone

Tuberville is not alone in his criticism of FEMA and the leadership that has diverted funds away from what most assume is the agency's core function.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott responded to the DHS secretary's revelation about FEMA's lack of resources by saying, “This is easy. Mayorkas and FEMA -- immediately stop spending money on illegal immigration resettlement and redirect those funds to areas hit by the hurricane. Put Americans first.”

Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) echoed Abbott's frustrations, saying, “The Biden-Harris administration took more than a billion tax dollars that had been allocated to FEMA for disaster relief and used it to house illegal aliens. Now, they've abandoned American hurricane victims in North Carolina, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, and Tennessee.”

Now that tropical storm Milton is strengthening in the Gulf of Mexico and making its way toward Florida, with many predicting that it will soon reach hurricane status, it remains to be seen how FEMA -- with its supposed funding woes -- will respond to the needs of yet another wave of Americans requiring the type of assistance the agency is meant to provide.
