U.N. Cuba vote: Trump gains rare backing against embargo resolution

Brace yourselves—President Donald Trump just pulled off a surprising coup at the United Nations, gaining unexpected allies in a vote over the long-standing U.S. embargo on Cuba.

This week, the U.N. General Assembly passed its annual resolution condemning the embargo, but with a historic twist: seven countries, including the U.S., voted against it, and twelve abstained, marking a significant shift in global opinion, according to Breitbart

For years, Cuba’s communist regime has trotted out these resolutions, pointing fingers at the U.S. for every economic woe on the island.

Historic Support for U.S. Position

Normally, only Israel stands with the U.S. in opposing this measure, but this year, Argentina, Hungary, Paraguay, North Macedonia, and Ukraine joined in, tallying seven “no” votes.

Another dozen nations, including Costa Rica, Poland, and Estonia, opted to sit this one out, abstaining in what the U.N. called a “noticeable shift” in sentiment.

Could it be that more countries are finally seeing through Cuba’s tired narrative, especially given its troubling alignment with Russia and dismal human rights record?

Cuba’s Excuses Don’t Hold Up

Cuba’s leadership loves to blame the embargo for all its troubles, but let’s not kid ourselves—decades of failed policies and iron-fisted control are the real anchors dragging the nation down.

The embargo isn’t some impenetrable wall; it permits food, medicine, and humanitarian aid, with U.S. exports to Cuba climbing to $585 million in 2024, up 16% from the year before.

Even in crises like Hurricane Melissa this week, the U.S. doesn’t block emergency help, and nations like Germany chipped in with $330,000 for storm relief.

Regime’s Ineptitude Blocks Food Access

Here’s the real scandal: U.S. food exports, including $21 million in chicken products this June, arrive at Cuban ports but often never reach the people who need them.

Martí Noticias points the finger at “the Castro regime’s rationing card, a highly ineffective food rationing policy that has existed since 1963.” Sounds like a bureaucracy straight out of a Cold War relic.

While $38.4 million in American goods piles up, Cuba’s state-run system fumbles, leaving citizens hungry as leaders play the victim on the world stage.

Ukraine Draws Line Over Cuba’s Ties

Ukraine’s decision to vote against the resolution packs a punch, fueled by Cuba’s support for Russia, including supplying mercenaries for the conflict in Ukraine.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha didn’t mince words: “We remember Cuban President’s wish of ‘success’ to Putin in his war of aggression against Ukraine. We heard it well.”

The U.S. State Department also fired a sharp reminder on social media: “Voting with the Cuban regime means supporting their repression of religious leaders, Ladies in White, UNPACU, San Isidro movement, and all those Cubans brave enough to raise their voice for the cause of freedom.” Isn’t it time more nations took note of this harsh reality?
