U.S. diplomat abruptly resigns

A U.S. diplomat and a long-serving member of the U.S. Department of State has just resigned.

The now ex-diplomat, according to the Washington Examiner, is Hala Rharrit.

For about the past 18 months, she has been the Arab language spokeswoman for the Biden administration, and for about the past 18 years, she has been a member of the State Department. But, Rharrit has just called it quits.

"I had full intentions of continuing on in my career until I reached senior levels. I never had the intention of resigning," she said.

The "why?"

Rharrit says that she has decided to resign over the Biden administration's approach to the Israel-Hamas war.

This, by itself, does not really fill in the blank, because Biden has been all over the map regarding the Israel-Hamas war.

But, Rharrit says that she specifically decided to resign because the U.S. government continues to send weaponry to Israel to help it take on Hamas.

She said:

I was seeing on a daily basis the images that were going viral in the Arab world of all of the dead children. How can it not get to you as a human being, as a mother? And it was devastating to know that it was our bombs that were killing those children, most likely. And more devastating to know that despite all of their deaths, we’re still sending more arms because somehow we think that that’s the solution. It’s insane. Diplomacy, not arms, is what we need.

They tried to silence her

Rharrit further says that, prior to her resignation, she attempted to voice her concerns with the State Department, but that some tried to "silence" and "sideline" her.

"I was told ‘You’re refusing to do your job,’” she said.

Rharrit claimed that many of her colleagues were sympathetic to her viewpoints.

The State Department, itself, has put out a statement, saying:

The secretary reads every single one of those dissent channel cables and dissenting viewpoints from across the administration. We continue to welcome them, and we think that it helps lead to stronger, more robust policymaking."

There's two more

The Examiner reports that "Rharrit is the first-known career U.S. diplomat to resign due to the Biden administration’s position on the [Israel-Hamas war]."

But, it appears that there are two other non-diplomats who have resigned from the administration for the same reason. Breitbart News reports:

Rharrit’s resignation in April came after Josh Paul, the former director of Congressional and Public Affairs for the State Department’s Bureau of Political-Military Affairs, had resigned in October over the Biden administration providing weapons to Israel.
