Virginia could be key to Republicans' victory: Report

According to a new report from Fox News, Virginia might be a "roadmap" for Republicans in the upcoming 2024 elections.

This comes as the state seems to be making a huge swing to the political right.

The swing began with the election, in 2021, of Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R). The race, the reader may remember, garnered national attention as Youngkin managed to defeat former Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe (D).

This, however, was not Virginia Republicans' only victory. They also won the races for lieutenant governor, attorney general, and the state's House of Delegates. The state has made a huge shift from blue to red.

The final frontier

Virginia Republicans currently control everything except for the state's Senate, which belongs to the Democrats. This is what Youngkin and other Virginia Republicans are now looking to change in the upcoming state elections.

"Virginia is holding pivotal contests for legislative control in November, and Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin hopes to boot Democrats from their last stronghold in Richmond, where Democrats hold a slim majority in the state Senate," Fox reports.

Before Youngkin, Virginia Democrats had been dominating the state, particularly since the 2008 presidential election of Barrack Obama. Virginia Democrats have won the last six state Senate elections, going all the way back to 2006. President Joe Biden won the state in the 2020 presidential election.

This November, we will see if Virginia Republicans can break this streak of Virginia Senate victories. Fox highlights what a Republican victory would mean for the state.

The outlet reports, "If Youngkin is successful [in taking the Virginia Senate], the governor would be able to push forward a conservative agenda in a state that has been trending blue over the past two decades."

Looking ahead to 2024

Fox goes on to suggest that another victory for Virginia Republicans could have national implications.

Per the outlet:

If Republicans succeed, it could boost Youngkin — a rising star in the GOP — toward a potential White House run, perhaps even next year. Just as importantly, the results in Virginia would be seen by the GOP as a bellwether ahead of next year’s presidential election, and the battles for control of the Senate and House.

In other words, Fox is suggesting here that a victory for Virginia Republicans in November might be a predictor of how the Republicans might do in the 2024 elections.

In politics, nothing is a certainty.

But, a Republican victory in Virginia certainly would not be a bad sign.
