Many Democrats, especially those running for president, seem to have the unique ability -- if not a super power -- to morph their accents into something that more closely matches the audience as a whole. 

According to the Daily Mail, Vice President Kamala Harris deployed that tired, offensive ability at a recent teacher's union rally in the swing state of Michigan this week.

The vice president was absolutely torched across social media for the cringey accent change, which many call "code-switching," which means someone speaks to sound more like a "Black accent."

Critics slammed her for switching accents, which occurred at a rally held at a Detroit high school. Her accent, saying the same phrase, sounded quite different at another rally held on the same day in Pittsburgh.

What happened?

Harris is no stranger to deploying different accents to pander to certain crowds. She did it earlier this year in Atlanta, and it was just as bad.

"You better thank a union member for the five-day work week," Harris told the crowd. "You better thank a union member for sick leave. You better thank a union member for paid leave. You better thank a union member for vacation time."

The line, which she also delivered in Pittsburgh, sounded quite different from city-to-city, sparking immediate backlash across social media.

The Daily Mail noted:

Discovery Institute journalist Jonathan Choe noted on X, formerly Twitter, that it was a code switch Harris was using to relate more with a predominantly black and urban audience listening to her remarks on Monday.

'Kamala Harris code switching again as she busts out a new accent at a rally in Detroit,' he wrote.

Former President Donald Trump has also taken shots at Harris, who is half Indian and half Jamaican, for pandering to Black audiences.

White House dodges

Fox News Channel's Peter Doocy asked White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre about Harris' sudden accent change in front of a predominantly Black crowd.

Not surprisingly, KJP dismissed the question and quickly diverted.

"I mean, do you hear the question that you’re – I mean, do you think Americans seriously think that this is an important question?" Jean-Pierre pushed back.

KJP added, "You know what they care about? They care about the economy, they care about lowering costs, they care about health care. That’s what they want to hear…democracy and freedom…I’m not going to even entertain some question about … it’s just. Hearing it sounds so ridiculous. The question – I’m talking about the question  – is just insane."
