Watchdog group files ethics complaint against Rep. Jasmine Crockett

The Washington Free Beacon reported late last month Texas Democrat Rep. Jasmine Crocket failed to disclose investments in marijuana businesses and other companies.

That fact has led a nonpartisan watchdog group to submit a complaint charging that she has violated federal law.

Watchdog group targets Crockett

According to the Free Beacon, that allegation was recently put forward by the Foundation for Accountability and Civic Trust (FACT).

They maintain that Crockett’s failure to disclose the contents of her investment portfolio was a violation of the Ethics in Government Act. Those who run afoul of the legislation can face a fine of up to $50,000 and a sentence of one year behind bars for each offence.

"When Members of Congress fail to accurately and fully disclose their financial interests, it undermines the integrity of our government and erodes the public’s trust," FACT executive director Kendra Arnold told the Free Beacon.

"The disclosure laws are not optional. They are essential safeguards that ensure lawmakers are not using their positions for personal financial gain," she stressed.

Stock transactions scrutinized

"Given the inconsistencies in Rep. Crockett’s filings, an immediate investigation is warranted," Arnold went on to maintain.

The Free Beacon noted that members of Congress need only reveal stock holdings that are valued at over $1,000, and while serving in the Texas legislature, Crockett indicated that she owned fewer than 100 shares in each of 25 companies listed.

Yet FACT observed that two of the securities in question traded at more than $1,000 per share at the time of Crockett's 2021 disclosure submission.

"For instance, at least two of the stocks that Crockett did not disclose, T2 Biosystems and Red Hill Biopharma, were valued at more than $1,000 per share for the entirety of 2021," the document read.

"This means that so long as Crockett owned a single share of these stocks, regardless of whether she sold them or continued to own them at the end of 2021, she was required to disclose her ownership during the year," it added.

Marijuana investments raise eyebrows

In its earlier report, the Free Beacon highlighted how Crockett's marijuana investments have raised eyebrows given her legislative history in both Washington and Austin.

This included co-sponsoring a piece of legislation in Congress earlier this year, which would decriminalize marijuana at the national level.
