West Wing creator backs off from suggestion Mitt Romney replace Biden in 2024 election
Aaron Sorkin, creator of the television show "The West Wing" among others, has quickly backed off from his initial suggestion that Sen. Mitt Romney, a moderate Republican, replace President Joe Biden on the 2024 ticket.
As much as it sounds like it could have been a joke, Sorkin made his proposal in a guest essay for the New York Times and was quite earnest about it.
Sorkin thought putting Romney at the head of the Democrat ticket would galvanize the anti-Trumpers and show unity between the parties.
In theory, it doesn't sound like a bad idea for building a majority coalition, but Democrats seem to want to rally around Vice President Kamala Harris instead.
No way Romney!
The intersectionalists in the party love the idea of the first woman president, and she's Black, too!
No way they're going to let another old white guy push her out of the place that is rightfully hers, even if the early polls don't show her doing any better than her predecessor Biden.
Sorkin wrote the piece before Biden actually stepped down, and he quickly backtracked once that happened on Sunday.
He borrowed the X account of Josh Malina, who played Will Bailey on the West Wing, to publicize that he changed his mind.
“I need to borrow your Twitter account again,” an email screenshot Malina shared on X said. “I take it all back. Harris for America!”

Romney didn't comment on Sorkin's piece, but said about Biden's decision to step down: “Others will judge his presidency. However, having worked with him these past few years, I respect President Biden. His decision to withdraw from the race was right and is in the best interest of the country.”
Democrats all over the place want to draft Romney for traditionally Democrat positions.
Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman suggested in April that Romney take over as Harvard President after Claudine Gay had to step down over plagiarism allegations.
Harris is getting a lot of support to be the Democrat nominee, and said that Biden was doing better after having COVID and would be back on the road soon.
I guess he'll be campaigning for Harris now? And maybe doing his job a little better since he won't have to campaign on top of it.
