This week saw trustees associated with Jeffrey Epstein's estate turn over the convicted sex offender's "birthday book" to the House Oversight Committee.

While the Wall Street Journal previously reported that the book contains a card from President Donald Trump, the White House has denounced the document as being "fake."

White House press secretary: "He did not sign it"

According to Breitbart, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt conveyed that message in a social media post on Sunday, writing, "The latest piece published by the Wall Street Journal PROVES this entire 'Birthday Card' story is false."

"As I have said all along, it’s very clear President Trump did not draw this picture, and he did not sign it. President Trump’s legal team will continue to aggressively pursue litigation," she continued.

"Furthermore, the 'reporter' [Joe Palazzolo] who wrote this hatchet job reached out for comment at the EXACT same minute he published his story giving us no time to respond," Leavitt stressed.

The White House press secretary concluded by declaring, "This is FAKE NEWS to perpetuate the Democrat Epstein Hoax!"

Journal acknowledges that check photograph was "mocked up"

While Leavitt did not elaborate on how the Journal's reporting proved the card to be fraudulent, she may have been alluding to an article which the newspaper published on Monday.

It carried a photograph from the birthday book of an oversized check "which had been mocked up to appear that it was sent from Trump to Epstein."

"Beneath it, a caption said: 'Jeffrey showing early talents with money + women sells ‘fully depreciated’ [woman’s name] to Donald Trump for $22,500.' The woman’s name is redacted in the image," the Journal explained.

While the Journal did not name the woman, her lawyer denied that she had a romantic relationship with either Trump or Epstein and denounced the image as a "disgusting and deeply disturbing hoax."

Trump files $10 billion lawsuit

Breitbart recalled how for his part, Trump denied the Journal's story when it was published in July and threatened to sue the publication.

"This is not me. This is a fake thing. It’s a fake Wall Street Journal story. I never wrote a picture in my life," he said of the card, which was apparently drawn by hand.

Reuters later reported that the president filed a defamation suit against the Journal which is seeking $10 billion in damages.
